I would like to see a change for this, as well. I'd be fine with a DMFlag to reenable the old behavior, in case somebody wants it.

I'm pretty sure respawning with the "highest" weapon is the intended behavior. An option for "keeping last used weapon" would be nice, then.

Here it is a strange problem I found in zdoom: play a online coop game in doom2.wad MAP01, get all the weapons in the map (in particular the rocket launcher and the plasma rifle), die with the rocket launcher selected. When you respawn, you'll get the plasma rifle instead of keeping the rocket launcher.
Is it an intended behavior? If yes, is it there a way to keep the weapon? It sounds strange that you'll switch the weapon with a higher-ranked weapon.
If not, then it should be okay to ask a compat flag with this behavior.
