Yeah, there tends to be a bit of delay in it... Though, I've heard some something similar being done for CounterStrike.
IIRC, you can configure how much is buffered before being delivered as well, but for something like that, it's best to keep your bitrate as low as possible.

I'm with the Chris guy: I hope not. Call it paranoia, but I don't want a game doing anything online that it doesn't have to. (One of the few exceptions is Hexen II, which requires "internet" access for its server/client system. Weird way to do it, but required.) If I'm actually playing online, fine. I'll grant it access for the specific purpose of relaying MP-related data. But I'd still rather hear game music that is part of the mod, on my own machine. (I have enough lag problems, really.)

If there's a console command restricted to a single client, then that's fine, they can listen. I have Winamp if I were intersted in online radio - Which I'm not. :P
Then just don't select the track. They way I intend on using this is on a per-client basis, not forced upon anyone.

Is it even possible for a mod to use this?

It wouldn't rely on radio streaming for music, as it would have normal music selectable as well. This is more for a multiplayer-exclusive mod, and would be great for a set of dedicated servers. Would allow my players to listen to a selection of music, hear clan announcements, funny radio pseudocommercials, amongst other things. It's something fun and adventurous that I've wanted to try for a long while, and it might actually bring in listeners to the shoutcast I've had up.

Even if the shoutcast isn't up all of the time, it would be a good surprise for some people to tune in and find it playing something cool.
Btw, as far as bandwidth is concerned, I always broadcast at a low bitrate to begin with. (64kbps)

As long as I still have my NoIP, and some interest, It'll probably be going for a very long time.

Paranoia caused by past dialup connections, mostly. That and I don't care for radio in general because I'm a control freak about my "Now Playing" status.

Also, some people have a limit to the amount of bandwidth they can use per month. Using up some of that bandwidth by playing a single-player mod wouldn't be very nice. I could actually see that as being a reason for having the feature removed.. or at least, not directly accessible to mods.

I can't say I much like the idea of having a mod rely on streaming radio for music, though. I wouldn't use it, for one.

:surprise:
YOU CAN DO THAT?!

It'd be nice to have a proper explanation as to how. I'd love to do it some time with a mod of my own XD

So, Randy, I'm guessing this works with shoutcast? If so, could you explain how I play it back? I'm having difficulties here, and am not sure what to do.

EDIT: Ok, I found out that it does work, but only if I load listen.pls from my Shoutcast via the playlist command. Could you perhaps add support for putting the .PLS file in our WADs/PK3s as a music lump, and load it as we would any other kind of music lump?(Via Changemus, ACS, or otherwise) Or if there is a way already, could you explain how?

You really ought to try it before you suggest it. Streaming Internet radio is supported by FMOD Ex, so it's already in. And if you want it to keep playing when you switch levels, you just need to wrap it inside a playlist.

Winamp does radio streaming fine - just have that in the background. That way it won't stop when you close ZDoom. :P
