With the recent backend and palette changes, this no longer seems to be an issue and can therefore be closed.

Noticed this when working on my latest PR. Isolated back to the commit in the title.

Background prior to this was solid black. On my 60Hz display with vsync on, I now get a strobing effect between white and black. It's potentially a hazard as I reckon it could set off someone with epilepsy.

I had a look through the commit but I don't have sufficient knowledge to try and isolate the issue further.
