No. They just vanished. Setting an actor to a non-existent state makes it go away.

As I said, it was a bug in the DECORATE lump. But the monster still shouldn't just disappear without warning.

Yes, it was clearly an omission in the DECORATE lump but I think that a monster that doesn't have a pain state should not attempt to enter it. Instead it vanishes without a trace.
