I think the Smoother weapons animations could be replaced with this link, as the link in the original thread is dead.

EDIT: For some reason I can't get any sounds out of the Illucia wad. I've just spent all evening trying to compile SLADE to no avail and DEUTEX doesn't work either, so would anyone know what the problem might be?

I was a bit iffy about posting it because I didn't track where I got the sounds, and the files are embedded into a copy of Mike12's revyskin.wad. But ah well, here you go. Please note I'm not trying to take credit for the skin or creation of the audio. I just replaced a few of revyskin's default sounds to be more to my liking.

That all said, I like that this edited set has a lower voice than usual. Some may not like that the wall-using sound is the same as the jumping sound, but I think it's okay. I like that it doesn't sound sexual when spammed, unlike most dsnoway sounds included with female skins.

For a ready-made non-hackjob I recommend st_illucia.wad. Has a higher voice though.

I'm all about vanilla-but-improved, and have slowly built up autoloads around this.

I use two batch files to swap between this default mod loadout and a smaller, much more strict "vanilla" mod set for use with large mods that conflict with the above.

Sometimes I'll autoload other things when the mood strikes:
pal_plus.wad for darker colors
psxmusic.wad for PlayStation music
AMMO2.deh is a deHacked patch I made that reduces the amount of ammo gained from items.
Ransu's Remastered Game Music
I also really like Z86's Particle Fire Enhancer's fancy graphics but not its revamped sound effects (footsteps!).
Lookin' forward to Reinchard's high-resolution texture project bearing fruit.

I use a smaller but similar list of mods for Heretic. Higher-quality SFX, widescreen weapons/status bar, high-res textures, etc.

(is a graphic replacement only so should be compatible with any other custom HUDs)
(Also adds 1px black border to bottom to eliminate the yellow HOM line on certain resolutions)

Bumpity-boo again. TDAFSHUD v2 has been updated again, mostly fixing minor idiocies in the mod specific HUDs that I somehow missed. Link the same as before.

Revenant100's sprite fixes.
It aligns all the sprites properly, and fixes a few sprite oddities present in the vanilla sprites.

Here's something you'll see me using in my streams. It's a smoother version of the Doom HUD, which just the graphics replaced. Only just made replacements for the numbers and I'm not sure if I like them, but they're there and easily removeable if you can't stand them. :P
