Doomguy: Your definition of gameplay is...?

And putting numeric values for abstract amounts of concentration and perception is fail.

by Doomguy0505 » Wed Dec 14, 2005 4:35 am

The typical modern game is when you survive with nothing left to do because of their obscure method of beating the level.
Graphics +1000%
Gameplay -10^100%

by Belial » Wed Dec 14, 2005 4:32 am

Indeed. The newest game I've played was Painkiller and it was just a series of scripted fights. Boring, shiteasy, all graphics no gameplay etc.

by Graf Zahl » Wed Dec 14, 2005 3:34 am

No. Your typical modern video game is far too linear to involve switch hunts. But Hexen is one of the least linear games I have ever seen.

by Doomguy0505 » Wed Dec 14, 2005 12:58 am

sounds like your typical modern day video game

by Belial » Wed Dec 14, 2005 12:17 am

Heh. Well, from my experience, if you want to get the most fun out of Hexen you need to know everything there is to know about each puzzle and switch, because nothing kills the gameplay more than getting lost in a switch hunt...

I always wondered what that switch did.

If it's the switch that's on a pillar surrounded by lava in a metal wall room that's one half of the Bright Crucible puzzle.

Ahh, I see. Well, after testing it, you would actually be correct; the switch indeed does say "half the puzzle" when you activate it. I'm not quite sure what that's for; trying many other switches in the hub didn't generate the same message, although I may have missed it. It's probably just related to opening something that eventually leads to the Bright Crucible.

Hmmm, so it WAS for the guardian of steel then.....or so I think. If you enter the Guardian of Fire from Guardian of Ice, then you find the switch which solves "Half the puzzle" although it doesn't say for the Seven Portals, so I will just assume its for one of those three.

Nice demo too :)

Heh, I did the work for you already. :) At 20 minutes, it's a bit slow, but that wasn't really the point of the demo. I don't visit the secret level, since it's only about getting through the seven portals, and I myself don't know the way around it (Although I know how to get there, I've only visited it in co-op, and both times I just ran around shooting monsters), but two of the switches I activate at the end tell you where to go, so maybe you can find it out yourself.

Oh, and before I forget, it's recorded for 2.0.98 and with the Cleric.
Also, I could have sworn that you open up the door to the exit portal when you hit the switch that says "One-Half of the puzzle has been solved"
No, the first three say "One-third of the puzzle has been solved," the next two say "Stairs have risen on the seven portals," and the secret level switch says "Stones grind on the seven portals." The two switches that open the door to the final portal don't give a message.

Somehow I always thought it was an intended part of the level sequence....oh well :P

@Dracula - If you really need help, I can make a demo showing you how to go through The Seven Portals
Anakin S. wrote:You're probably stuck at the guardian of steel where you need to hit both puzzle switches. But you can only hit one at a time because a steel block must be moved. How exactly do you move this thing around? It seems tricky.
It's actually easier than you think. Those metal sliding blocks are based off of two switches found at the top of either of the two staircases you go up when you first enter the level. One move the block to the left, the other moves it to the right. Same goes for the block behind the door that requires the steel key - two switches which move it either left or right.

Also, I could have sworn that you open up the door to the exit portal when you hit the switch that says "One-Half of the puzzle has been solved"

by Belial » Mon Dec 12, 2005 10:48 pm

Well, one moves the wall to the left, the other one to the right :). Use the automap while switching them to see the wall move.

Ya Bright Crucible is the secret and it's opened by picking up the torch on Steel after using both switches on Ice. 'You hear stones grinding...' etc.

Belial wrote:The two switches on the ends of the staircases leading to the exit portals move the walls.
But don't they have to be hit in a special sequence or something? I know they do move them. I've hit those switches before and I know what they do, but it seems unpredictable because I don't know the secret behind it.

Graf Zahl wrote:All the important switches on the Seven Portals give meaningful messages - even those leading to the secret level.
Wait, was the secret level
Spoiler:
Cause that would seem to make sense if it were...

@Dracula - There are two switches on Guardian of Steel and one on Guardian of fire that solve "One-third of the puzzle" on Seven portals. Once you have those doors open, look for the switches in those places that you opened.
