Great tutorial that extra glow with the gaussian blur was exactly what I needed.

The weapon is ripped from an app installed on the IPod of my little brother and this is what came out:

it works like the Doom chaingun at the moment so I had to make two muzzle flashes for this weapon.

Awesome!

It looks good, although I'd've probably used 00 00 FF for the colour of the "soft glow" layer.

@Yholl: It looks good, and I'm glad you like the tutorial. My only gripe is that the muzzleflash's center is higher than the muzzle. The flash should be coming from the center of the muzzle and radiating out from there. As a result it looks odd for the flash to be up that high.

This is my first attempt at any sprite work that didn't involve a simple palette swap. I wasn't sure how much to blend the gradient into weapon, so I tried to experiment a little. Which of the two that I posted above would you say looks better?

Edit: Nice tutorial by the way zrrion.

Thought I'd post this.

Combination of your tutorial and your chaingun muzzle flash in action.

EDIT: Reoriented the muzzleflash.

Thanks again for this tutorial, zrrion! It's really improved quite a few weapons.

I gave it a try with a subtle light blue on Freedoom's plasma rifle:

Looks nice but needs some more overlaying with the barrel and the flash.

Eh, it's not so bad as long as you use gradient maps (which you should) that are somewhat within the palette to colorize stuff.
That sure is a pretty HR Doom Rocket Launcher you got there...

You could always apply the palette afterward in Slade or your palletizer of choice. I typically do, but as it isn't necessary I left it out.
