To Randy Heit (and a few key persons)

Post by Nanami »

Dear Everyone,

A few days ago (two or three days from today, August 25th) in an IRC chat room BBG brought my attention to ZDoom.org's mainpage which had a post by three persons that were not Randy Heit. Two other people in the room posted in the news section to have it show up on the mainpage and then promptly deleted the post. I also made a post, had it screencaptured, and then deleted it. The only evidence of it exists in a shot BBG hosts on his site.

Innitially we were going to make a post somewhere to mention to Randy that user threads were enabled in the news section and should be turned off, but another in the channel wanted to put something on the main page so Randy would see it. Of course, after a short talk we put together (what we felt) a harmless joke to put on the front page, and it was posted by deathz0r. Admittedly, I encouraged the post of it so take some of the blame. I told him that if he got in any trouble for it, I would stand up for him if possible because I had part in it as well.

Unfortunately, Randy didn't show up the next day or even the next day as we had assumed, and more and more people were figuring out that they could post threads in the news forum. Soon it ended up being an out-of-hand jokefest spamming the front page, although none of the original party was involved in later posting. Still, the posts were more or less harmless and we figured it would be fixed soon and user threads would be disabled from the news section.

Earlier today, however, when I got up I checked my e-mail to see if my step-dad had written me back about a plane ticket yet. I only had one e-mail to check so I opened it:

Subject: administrative action regarding zdoom.org defacements
It has come to our attention here at Doomworld that you, among others, have been involved in incidents relating to the defacement of the ZDoom homepage. While we do not run the ZDoom site or forums and therefore have no ability to punish your involvement in these actions on the ZDoom site itself, it is our policy that we do not condone bragging about those actions here at Doomworld.

To that end, we will be placing certain Doomworld forum accounts on suspension (banning) -- unless you take appropriate steps such as providing an apology via e-mail to Randy Heit (which should be CC or BCC to an administrator at Doomworld) or publicly via the ZDoom General forum.

CC: Lut, Mordeth, Julian, Arioch, Cyb, mewse, Bloodshedder
I was a little perplexed at first, knowing that BBG had shown everyone the first, and he is a former Doomworld staff member. Also, Shaviro, Ichor, Julian, Lüt, and Arioch all posted on this thread, and although a few said not to go too far with it (Julian) and some thought it was stupid (Cyb), none actually stated that we should apologize, that it should be fixed or taken down, or that it was wrong. In fact, the general attitude of the thread is light and comedic. If anyone on the thread had said it required an apology then, I would have made one. The e-mail took me entirely by surprise as it says nearly the exact opposite of what the problem thread suggests.

I was also rather confused because I know that at least two current Doomworld staffers had posted on the main page and theirs had not been deleted. However, the purpose of the e-mail states that I am at fault for having bragged on the Doomworld forums about it, not the actual content of the ZDoom page.

In either case, it was an oversight to not realize it would cause problems on the page and that several people would take advantage of the site and spam it continuously. It will not happen again.

Also, as a side note, I do hope to hear an apology to Randy from others who have contributed to the jibberish on the mainpage, especially since two of them obtained carbon copies of the e-mail above because they are Doomworld staff members. As of the time of this message, the current posts on the front page are (in order): zwouth, Sparky, wildweasel, Carnevil, randie, Bloodshedder, Spary, mewse, Stupid N00b!, and deathz0r.

Although I can't vouch for everyone who has posted on the page, I do know a few of them, and I hope they have the decency to apologize for having done so in the first place.

Thank you,
Nanami

Rather than make another thread with my apology, I'll just write it in this thread.

Randy, I sincerely apologise for creating such a rather stupid and controversial news post on August 25th. While Nanami has said almost everything that I would have said, I will however mention my side of the story.

It was a rather boring night (in my timezone), and barely anyone was awake. I went to look in the most active channel, and I read about how BBG posted a bullshit news post on zdoom.org. I quickly thought up of a rather crazy idea to make a fake post about how I "hacked" the ZDoom page, even though I just stole the text from http://www.doomworld.com/ralphis. BBG took a screenshot of it and decided to post it in a particular Doomworld forum thread.

Nanami and BBG (and others who will not be mentioned, unless they reply to this thread) encouraged me to keep the post up there until Randy had seen it, and most likely reacted to it. I willingly decided to keep it up, and after I woke up the next morning, I find a few replies to the news post, calling me stupid or something like that. I dunno, I can't be bothered looking at it again.

I also noticed that the particular Doomworld forum thread (where BBG posted a screenshot of me showing off the newspost), that Julian had told us to control ourselves. I basicly replied with "I only intend to make one news post".

Fast forward to right now. I checked my email ten minutes ago to find the exact same email that Nanami had received. I initially thought that it was directed to me only, so I replied.

The reply said that I did not brag about how great I was by "hacking" the ZDoom news page (which is true, plus I did not brag about it anywhere else), and that BBG was the one who took the screenshot and posted it in the Doomworld forums. So yeah... once again, I publicly apologise to Randy for being a dickhead and being encouraged to keep such a stupid news post up. Because of the decent amount of replies, I won't delete the news post, as I'll let Randy do that when he actually reads it.

I had nothing to do with these posts, but I feel compelled to put in a word.

I noticed the ZDoom news page was doing what it's currently doing after deathz0r had posted his joke about hacking the page. I found it funny, but that's because I knew the community injokes. There lies the problem. Back before the whole Doom 3 thing, you could do something like this and everyone would have a laugh because they all knew it was a big joke. Unfortunately, as this has shown, newbies have no idea. I don't even know half the people who posted "news." The Doom community is evolving. The possibility for it to be bigger than the Quake community is a real one. With that comes a bunch of clueless newbies who won't get the injokes and will think it's cool to do shit like this all the time.

Within a year, Doom 3 will be released. I realise that there are many people who have been in the community longer than I have, but once Doom 3 is released, we will all be the old guard of the Doom community. The community we're used to will cease to exist as we know it, and that unfortunately means that jokes like this will no longer be able to be played for everyone to see. This may very well be the last, or one of the last, injokes of the old Doom community. Live it up.

EDIT: To clear up any newbie confusion, I don't mean go ahead and post like crazy, I mean have a laugh.

It was a harmless joke and pretty funny IMO. Not something for doomworld staff to "manage", Randy can take a joke.

It'd have been funny if Randy came online soon after the joke started, but obviously he didn't look at the page for couple days. And I think we're lucky that the posts have been funny so far...

Though I've already sent a short apology to Randy, I will make a new one here.

Randy, I, and others, have had fun at your expense, running amok on your website's main page. We exploited a mistake and broke your trust. Though I posted on the main page, I did remove what I had posted. I merely posted it for a screen-capture. I should have, however, kept this low-key and not encouraged anyone to join in. My lack of judgement led to more problems and I am sincerly apologetic.

Oi, I guess it was a dumb idea on my part to post a thread there myself. I apologize for adding to the clutter, and should have just stayed out of it.

I don't know if I owe an apology or not - I mean, what I posted on the news page about my sounds service could be considered spamming, but it was a legitimate news post...

Well, technically speaking, almost every post is news... from a certain point of view. Like people have said before, posting in the news section would not be a problem, if it was guranteed that no one would make useless posts, although that would make the main page rather cluttered (unless Randy could filter it so that only his posts made it to the main page).

Bottom line, this is Randy's website, and as such NO ONE other than him (or, of course, anyone HE may deem worthy), should have the right to post anything on the news page, no matter HOW news worthy one may think their news is.

The topic of moderators came up again.. Unfortunately, I think it just may indeed be necessary. Funny I don't remember the old forum requiring moderators. I guess it's too much to expect maturity from everyone.

Regards,

Maverick 8-)

Bah, message boards are no fun if everything goes according to plan. Beside that, I'm unable to see how this even remotely qualifies as a serious issue. It's all very silly.

Hmm, I wasn't here when this happened but I think we should all learn a lesson and forget about it now.
