Are marines UCA's employees?

If it's not ZDoom, it goes here.

Are marines UCA's employees?

Post by Ravick »

So, in Doom3, marines seems to be UAC's staff, however, in the DooM 2 and Evilution story-lines, they seem to be US military soldiers (and also in the Doom Movie). So, does the UAC have martial personel, or they have a contract with government military?

According to this, the marines may have been private military contractors.

From Doom's story:

"You're a marine, one of Earth's toughest, hardened in combat and trained for action. [...] you were transferred to Mars, home of the Union Aerospace Corporation. The UAC is a multi-planetary conglomerate with radioactive waste facilities on Mars and its two moons,Phobos and Deimos."

This to me sounds like UAC contracted the US Marines as security detail.

I've always assumed marines are government-military, UAC is a very big private contractor to the government.

For the definitions of "private" and "government" implicit here.

"The Union Aerospace Corporation is the largest corporate entity in existence

Originally focused on weapon and defense contracts new ventures have expanded into:

Biological Research
Space Exploration
And other scientific endeavors

With unlimited funds and the ability to engage in research outside of moral and legal obligations

The UAC controls the most advanced technology ever concieved..."

Well, Doom 3 leaves a good explanation already, UAC is beyond any government, they answer to nobody, with that in mind makes sense they have own personel to keep the security at military level.

Also a bonus for anyone who read the quote with the Doom 3 UAC's computer voice :)

"We are two" then.

_____________

BTW, I guess this is not stated who pays the marines then. The responses here points more or less to what I've seem: Marines seems to be private martial personal in Doom3, but public military in the previous games. I guess iD have never worried aboutit =/

I think the best thing to do is to treat Doom 3 the same was as Star Wars Episode 1 or Metroid: Other M: as an embarrassing deuterocanonical work that only has even that status due to a loophole in copyright law.

Are marines UCA's employees?
Somehow I doubt it.

More seriously: It doesn't seem that unusual that military personnel would be deployed for protection of an important military contractor. Doom's manual says that Our Hero was punished for insubordination (I.E. putting his C.O. in a body cast for ordering an attack on civilians) by being assigned to Phobos. *

You forgot to mention "Heretic 2" as well, but I agree.

* As an aside: This "throwaway backstory" also indicates that there were intra-human wars going on at the time the hell incident ocurred. Also, Doom 2's story indicates that a fraction of humanity escaped from the demon-infested Earth, which had to be rebuilt afterward. Imagine the sorts of spinoff mod storylines you could get out of Doom that have nothing to do with "oh man, hell is attacking again" at all.

I liked Doom 3 and Heretic 2. Though not as much as their predecessors.

Doom 3's plot is fine as well everything there with exception of the genre twist, from a fast-action game to a sci-fi creepy wannabe.

My problem with Doom 3 is that they did not commit to their genre change. I would have been okay with them doing slower movement and fewer, more dangerous monsters, if only they weren't giving you ammo hand-over-fist and resorting to "classic-style" ambushes instead of being more creative with them. There are too many things holding it back to classic-style gameplay, and I feel like if they did away with those links and turned it into a full-on "YOU ARE NOT WELCOME HERE" experience, they could have gone far.

Doom 3 = Doom minus everything good about Doom. It's like sex if you took away the personal intimacy and erotic stimulation and were left only with some vague sense of social validation (or the other thing) and feel of flesh on flesh in exchange for so much time spent in lubing, condom-fumbling, erection maintenance and body hair self-consciousness.

I've wanted to do a Hideous Destructor: Kefiristan mapset for ages. Complete with a backstory that contains the lives of the New-Martyrs slain by the American idolators.

Though apparently there's an actual place called Kafiristan(!)...
