what are your FAVOURITE maps and why?
what are your FAVOURITE maps and why?
in contrast to the other thread talking about the worst, what are your favourates? mine would be:
Pretty much all of E1, every level had something going for it, the standouts for me include:
E1M1: who DOESN'T like E1M1?! such a classic map, I remember as a child thinking "these are the best graphics ever!" and going "outside" was amazing at the time.
E1M2: Who wasn't scared of that computer maze?? As a kid I used to intentionally miss it out, man, being an 8 year old playing that level was intense.
E1M9: Great secret map, and I loved the non-linearity of it.
E2M2: I know a lot of you hate this level, but I kinda liked the crate maze, and very brooding music adds to the atmosphere.
E2M4: Creepy music and a great level design that get progressively more hellish, I always remember watching the demo of it at the title screen (Doom v1.2)
E2M7: A masterpiece, you can really tell "this is UAC's Headquarters", I love the complexity of it, and even the crate maze was great with the Demons.
E3M3: Kickass Slayer music, non-linear, challenging and a successful use of mixing techbase with hell IMO.
E3M5: LOVED the gothic architecture, even the teleport puzzle added a new challenge at the time.
E3M6: A unique map in that it was all open plan, the definitive "hell" map IMO.
E4M2: The hardest map in all of Doom, kicked my arse to hell and back.
E4M6: I just liked the level design, it seemed like you were storming a hidden castle.
E4M8: Cool use of marble, I dunno, I just like it.
Doom 2 didn't have as many decent maps if you ask me, a few good ones I like are:
MAP 01-08: the first lot of Doom2 maps are in my opinion, the most consistent, after that, the EXTREMELY uneven skill curve and bad mapping put me off.
MAP11: Considering how down right difficult MAP10 is, Circle of Death is a walk in the park.
MAP20: Am I the only one who likes the showdown?
MAP27-29: All 3 are decent, hellish, and hard, shame it leads to a disappointing last boss.

One of my favorite maps is MAP12 from doom 2.
It feels more open than most of the other maps to me and the showdown at the end with the cacodemons is pretty cool.

The one where people don't misspell the very word they're emphasizing in the phrase.
Also Factory, Underhalls, Computer Station and Industrial Zone.
Possibly Slough of Despair and Pandaemonium.
(basically all maps with plenty of cover and variety of ranges and elevations but where it's not a given that you will "divide and conquer" the various monster groups and there's a large portion of the map where anything can come at you from anywhere if you let it. EDIT: Well, okay, that's not true of the Factory, which I really like more for its "feel" - it's the one original D2 map that really makes me think I'm in a city, if a shitty industrial part of it that no one goes to if they don't work there or are bringing someone to murder in some out-of-the-way place. Also a relatively easy map that's also really easy to screw yourself over with if you want.)

I'm from England, where we use proper English (like the word colour, aluminium, and realise). And drive on the Correct side of the roadVaecrius wrote:The one where people don't misspell the very word they're emphasizing in the phrase.

"Favourate" is not a correct spelling of "favorite" or "favourite" in any part of the world

Can't help but come at this from the Playstation angle, but here's mine:
E1M7 - The definitive E1 level. Open, full of slime and plenty of scope for sniping enemies you otherwise wouldn't run into until much later. And tons of secrets.
E2M8 - Still remains one of the most iconic boss levels in any game. Actually took the place of E3M8 in PSX Doom.
E3M6 - One of the maps that was tweaked for consoles, but for my money the PSX version of this map was even better than the PC's.
E3M7 - For me, this map sums up what E3 is about. That teleport puzzle was very satisfying to suss out.
E4M8 - IMO the best map in E4, though on the PS the Spider Mastermind was replaced with a fuckton of Hell Knights.
MAP03 - One of my favourite Doom II maps, and the map that made me learn to love METAL2.
MAP14 - Really enjoyed this level. Very nonlinear in its layout.
MAP19 - I actually like the visuals in this map. One of the few Doom levels that actually vaguely resembles what the name implies.
MAP26 - Another one I really enjoyed. Similar sniping potential to E1M7.
Special mention:
PSX MAP29 - A really open level with a lot of exploration to do and bags of atmosphere.
PSX MAP30 - The original Threshold of Pain. A large (for the time) Hell level which wouldn't look out of place in E3, and the map I crib from most for my Hell maps.

Re: what are your FAVOURITE maps and why?
E1M5: Absolutely brilliant layout that is heavily interconnected and unified without being a maze, and gameplay, that, while easy, is nicely paced with a variety of interesting fights.
E1M7: E1M5 on steroids. Everything good about E1M5, but a bit more.
E2M2: The best of the Tom Hall maps, with a tense atmosphere and a sense of scale not seen in many of the Doom 1 levels.
E3M5: Dark, oppressive, and atmospheric, Unholy Cathedral feels the most hellish of all of Id Software's hell levels.
E4M1: An absolutely harrowing experience to play on harder difficulty levels and a nice introduction to Episode 4's style.
MAP14: Really tight, exciting gameplay and by Id standards very good architecture that actually sort of looks a bit like some sort of "village" or housing development.
MAP29: The Living End has an almost "narrative" feel with its steadily rising tension and feeling of constant progression towards the goal in the center, and some of the best fights in Doom II.

Haven't played Doom I yet, so nothing from that angle.
The Spirit World is probably my favo(u)rite Doom 2 map: it just seems to work the hellish angle more than the other maps. Plus the music is the best music in Doom 2.

From the standard maps from id Software, mostly the entirety of Final DooM: Evilution. E1M2 has a certain place in my heart, as does MAP15 -- I remember watching my brothers play deathmatch there, and telling each other to 'get out of my castle' - where the green 'tower' is.

I don't know why, but for some reason I loved the Waste Tunnels. I will agree with Virtue, though. DooM 2 really lacked in comparison to Ultimate. It always used to be my favorite as a kid, but when I got older and started to understand the gameplay of Doom, the original has always had a special place in my heart since.
I really liked Plutonia, too. And branching out of the stock levels PL2 and PRCP are among my top picks. I love the theme, and the gameplay (even the heinous overuse of Revenants
