[3709 Mac] ZPack E2M3: checkerboard portal

Postby printz » Sun Jul 08, 2012 4:31 pm

I'm trying to beat ZPack E2M3 (which happens to be a horribly unfair map), and in this place, where it used to be a portal, I see the checkerboard with some bleeding additions.

I'm using the r3709 SVN release for Mac, downloaded from DRDTEAM.

That portal is definitely somewhat broken. I don't think this is an engine bug - rather poor map design. My guess is that it was only tested with GZDoom which had much less problems with portals
What does the console say? If there's a checkerboard texture there should also be a warning message.

I don't get the missing textures; however the portal is still glitchy (and not as bad as another area later on, full of HOMs).

The console only complains about line 15 (type 15: autosave) which has an argument 1 of 10 but should be 0.

It's the ZPack from the first Idgames mirror (the fu-berlin.de one), if that changes anything.

Forget the portal glitches in that map. Tormentor clearly never checked them with the software renderer. They all contain constructs that don't work. The only interesting thing here is the checkerboard texture.

Because Tormetor doesn't use the software renderer. Ever. I recall he and I having a big spat about that awhile ago.

It's ironic that "ZPack: Random Maps for ZDoom" requires GZDoom to fully work...

GZPack had less of a ring to it. ...not that it had any to begin with.

At the console, as soon as I load the game at that level (from a save), I get the same warning message as Gez's. It's possibly a Macintosh ZDoom glitch? Or I have some settings activated which affect portal drawing?

Are you sure? I have in mind that these portals actually did work in times then ... but I am not sure anymore, could have been GZDoom indeed.

I'm pretty much the opposite in that I will always, always play with the software renderer unless the wad explicitly requires GZDoom. For ZPack's E2M3, I recall that in older versions of ZDoom the portals worked enough that problems like a checkerboard sky didn't exist. However, I do remember that certain angles occasionally presented clipping problems, though that was about it (and I think they were addressed? Or at least attempted to be addressed? Don't really recall.)

Does the missing texture (checkerboard) effect happen to others, especially non-Mac users?

I get the checkerboard, too, in zdoom 2.6.0 windows. With gzdoom I only get that skybox/portal glitch.

A cunning map, that one.
