What music files can doom play?

Postby buu342 » Sat Jun 02, 2012 6:47 am

Hello. I had some music (mp3) that i wanted to add to my doom mod. But doom wont play it. What different music files can doom play? (anything but midi and xm)

ZDoom supports a variety of music formats, including MP3s. You can check on them here.

Now, to figure this out:

  • What archive format are you using? Is it a WAD or a PK3? If it's the latter, then make sure the music file is in a directory called music inside the PK3.
  • Also, make sure that the music file's name is 8 characters long or less.

ZDoom can play many formats of music - basically anything that FMOD supports plus a few others. MP3s are supported.

However, from your question it seems as if you might be trying to get an MP3 to work in the original Doom exe. That will not work. It only supports MUS and, I think, MIDI can work too.

Correct. It was added in version 1.5 to be precised. However, it doesn't actually play back the MIDI at all, but instead it converts to to an MUS when needed.
