Voxels aren't exclusive to GZDoom. They work with ZDoom as well.

There are model to voxel converters as well. The one I found used MD2/MD3s.
Quick and dirty convert:

I have often thought about the idea of voxels as view models for weapons. I wonder what I could do with that.

I think someone already attempted that (phi108?), the result was interesting but it took some hacking, as far as I know.

Alright, people, here's my AutoWolf bot in action :D

I wanted to choose a more frantic mission, but the bot still has a chance to screw up in one like those :D
There are some tactics to improve before I even release this for beta testing, lol.

I don't think Skulltag supports voxels, since they've been implemented in r3086 of ZDoom (SVN build), while Skulltag, according to the ZDoom wiki, is based on a very old version of ZDoom (2.3.1.1551).

Printz, I've actually got a couple of questions regarding AutoWolf...

  • Does it automatically know parts of the level layout, i.e. the locations of secret doors? I noticed it just running up and pushing a secret door about 35 seconds in; is it just programmed to try to search certain wall textures?
  • Does the bot read how much HP an enemy has left, or is it "guessing"? Early in the video, the bot kills one of the guards with only one machinegun shot, as if it knew ahead of time that it would only take the one shot. No ammo waste going on...
  • Did I see the bot back away from a door that it opened? Perhaps that was a coincidence? That's a tactic I tend to use myself to keep the enemy bottlenecked.

Very early, VERY rough progress on a tech demo for ECWolf:

Spoiler:

Yeah the new palette is playing hell with the original sprites, I know.

Things changed so far:
New hi-res shovel, Luger, and MP40. The shovel and MP40 have different behavior from their original Wolfenstein equivalents. The shovel can one-hit-kill many weaker enemies.
New guard and SS with somewhat different behavior. SS fires very rapidly but for half damage each shot. Guards and SS drop their weapons instead of clips when they die.
Partially complete new status bar with transparent numbers (and a marble texture to show the transparency off).
Pain sounds (a gross hack using A_PlaySound).
New palette with several relatively muted color ranges such as tan, gray-green, and rust colors.

To do:
Complete sets of Wehrmacht and SS enemies (pistol, machine gun, rifle, and officer enemies for each).
New Kommando enemy, has a chaingun and the Skulltag big nazi sprites. Basically like Hans Grosse but with rotations and less than 1/4 the hitpoints.
MG42 and rocket launcher, which will have their own ammo types.
New static objects, textures, and flats.
(Possible) Mauser 98k if Blzut3 makes A_GunAttack parameterized before the first release (unlikely).
New maps with the new stuff in them.

This mod will be a single pk3 file instead of a traditional Wolfenstein mod.

Well, just to be clear, this is a modification of another port, not an addon, which gives me full access to game's variables. I also didn't care about emulating human behavior, but going through any way as long as it's mechanically legal (in this case, I'm simulating a keyboard player -- circle-strafing is also forbidden in Wolf3d).

Navigating through Wolf3d is extremely easy, using some high-school level search algorithms (mostly Dijkstra, sometimes A* when goals are known). Basically, it has to find (by looking at the overhead map) useful items, secrets, baddies and finally the exit. They all are once-only, so as soon as the bot hits them, they're collected and gone.

  • Does the bot read how much HP an enemy has left, or is it "guessing"? Early in the video, the bot kills one of the guards with only one machinegun shot, as if it knew ahead of time that it would only take the one shot. No ammo waste going on...
  • Nope, it just reacts instantly.
  • Did I see the bot back away from a door that it opened? Perhaps that was a coincidence? That's a tactic I tend to use myself to keep the enemy bottlenecked.
  • It backs away from dangerous encounters (currently, point blank enemies and SS cops shooting). I should program it to be especially fearful of Mutants...
