[????-3563]Particular music lump can't be played in linux

Postby Edward-san » Sat Apr 14, 2012 8:33 pm

To reproduce this:

http://sickedwick.net/wads/jumpmaze.zip

run zdoom like this:
Code: Select allExpand view
./zdoom -iwad doom2.wad -file jumpmaze.wad -warp 32

then use in console:

Code: Select allExpand view
warp 5087 -7262

press the inner wall, you should hear the music, but in linux no sounds can be heard. Windows users confirmed it works fine. I couldn't check other linux users.

[edit]Also, if you warp to map29 you should hear some music, but you can't.

Interestingly, slade3 doesn't recognize the sound type of the associated music (d_secret for the first problem, d_volcan for the second)

As I suspected, all the music files that SLADE cannot identify are WMA. (That would be D_BLUE, D_EVIL, D_FROZEN, D_REFINY, D_SECRET, and D_VOLCAN.) For reasons that should be obvious, these will only work on Windows. Yes, a custom loader could be written for Linux that interfaces with ffmpeg to decode it, but considering you can just use something like Vorbis (with probably better results at the same 33 kbps), what's the point?

The irony that these are all WMA is that aside from D_BLUE, they all sound like renders of other formats that ZDoom supports natively.

Are there any good reason to reject them? If they play on Windows, good. If they don't play on Linux, then people should complain to the modder, not the port developer.

No, absolutely not. They'd need active checking. As it is they just get passed to FModEx. The Windows version can handle them, the Linux version not.

What should be done, though, is to mark them as Windows only in the Wiki. As long as WMA gets listed as a supported format this might happen again.

You are overestimating the amount of people who actually check the wiki out.

This is hard to believe, I don't know where I'd be if it wasnt for the wiki.
