[Request] Models of office furniture

[Request] Models of office furniture

Postby ReX » Thu Mar 29, 2012 12:00 pm

I am looking for models of furniture commonly found in offices. I already have plenty of models for desks, padded leather chairs & couches, and office chairs (e.g., swiveling, metal frame, wooden). I need the following:

1. Book shelf with books on the shelves (wooden or metal)
2. Coffee table (any shape will do; wooden, metal, with or without glass)
3. Credenza (wooden or metal)

I also need a model of a filing cabinet, using the attached textures:

I'd appreciate any help. Many thanks.

I made a couple of filing cabinets for Paranoid using a very similar texture. I think that they were 3 and 4 (or maybe more) drawer ones though. If they are OK, you could paste these drawers on to the old skin. If they are no use, sure, it would be easy enough to make another one. It's just a cuboid.

The other things I could also so easily enough. Unfortunately you've caught me right at the end of my last day of free time for, probably, the next week or so. If it can wait a few days then I can probably get all of these things done for you. What type of credenza are you looking for? They seem to vary a lot in style and appearance.

Hmm. I need to go back and check for the filing cabinet model. I could have sworn we didn't have one, otherwise I would have used it for the 4-storey office building on Map05. I do remember that we had a discussion about them appearing over-sized when done with sectors. If we do have one, it will use the same textures as those in my post above, and we'll be all set.

About other furniture, I wasn't actually asking for someone to build the models for me, just point me to already built models. However, if you're volunteering to build it, here is a simple example of a credenza. You don't even need to do the "footers" - you can just make it a straight cuboid. Also, if you have a model of a book-shelf lying aroud I can certainly put it to good use.

Many thanks.

Ah, OK, one of the simple credenzas. I could easily do something like that. I did a google image search and there seem to be 101 different types of things that various people call credenzas. None of them were desperately complicated though.

I checked and there are definitely filing cabinet models in the Paranoid PK3. Not too surprisingly, the skin is called filecab.png and the models are filec02.md2 and filec03.md2. I guess there must have been a filec01 at some point too. No idea what happened to that.

Anyway, sure, I could do all of these models. They are all nice simple shapes. If you have a particular size/shape of bookshelf in mind, it would help if you posted a picture of the kind of thing that you want. The only unknown is when I will manage to get around to it. The next week is going to be busy with getting last minute student investigations finalised and submitted to the exam board. I've got seven to review tomorrow alone. :? If someone else helps out in the meantime, that's fine.

Muchas gracias, señor.

That's settled then. No need to do another set. [I didn't have ready access to my "gaming" computer, and I couldn't easily check.]

I'll poke around and come up with a picture of a simple book shelf.

As you well know, I tend to plod along when creating my maps. I'd venture to say that it's likely going to be several months before the complete set is done, and you'll get to do a test run well before it is ready for release. In other words, no urgency on any of the models.

OK, I need a break. I had a quick go at the credenza. I just went with what was in my head and, consequently, it looks more like a piece of furniture that used to be in my mother's house than it does your example picture. So, if its not what you want, or you want any of it adjusted, let me know. (As I suspected, messing with the skin graphic actually took longer than making the model.)

load up and "summon credenza" or "summon credenzashort"

Procrastination is a wonderful thing.
Here's one a bit more like you asked for and probably more suited to an office environment.

This time summon credenza2.

Again, any tweaks required, let me know.

Right, back to doing what I am meant to be doing. :?

Actually, I'm more fond of the first one. I was looking for something that would fit in an executive suite, and that rich wood color says "look at me! I'm important because I have furniture made with expensive wood!"

However, I can use the other credenza for the "middle management" offices, where all the workers are looking to stick a knife in everyone else's back at the first opportunity.

Many thanks.

[EDIT: Ha! Ha! Those are perfect! Thanks, again.]

Why do I find the word "credenza" so amusing...?

Hey, great work Enjay.

As long as credit is provided (naturally!) would you mind if I also put these to use? I have no immediate plans for them, but they may come in handy at some point as part of my stock/freeware model library.

I have no objections. Anything I make is pretty much on a "do with it what you will" basis but I think it would only be fair for Rex to get the first release with them. When he does, you will also see the matching bookshelves that I did to go with them.

Those models look like they could be made with sectors alone. Or are you able to push them in ZDoom, like in Doom 3?

They probably could. They would be a little fiddly to do and it would be difficult to match a flat to the top in a consistent manner. Also, some of the bits must be getting on for only 1 unit in dimensions (eg the thickness of the top and the door handles on the second one) and, again, that would be difficult to texture. The higher detailing, of course, may not suit every mod - especially if only Doom original textures were being used - but I don't suppose that will be a problem with what Rex is doing. Now that the model is done, all Rex will have to do is drop the actor on his map wherever he wants it and possibly drop a bridge actor or blocking line beside it to make sure the credenza seems to block things properly.

If Rex wants to set them up that way, they could be pushable. However, that is easier to achieve with models that are roughly square in plan view because ZDoom uses the underlying actor for collision and all actors are square from the top but these models are rectangular. It's not an insurmountable problem but is does make things fiddlier.

That looks like something which LilWhiteMouse might be able to do :P

I'm actually going to make them unpushable, much like every other piece of furniture in the mod except for the "lunch room" chairs. The thing one has to be careful with when making objects pushable, is to make sure that the player won't accidentally block him/herself by pushing the object against, say, the ony doorway. Because the "pull" function hasn't yet been incorporated (that's correct, isn't it?) you could push something against the only way out of an area and get stuck inside.

I am using pushable crates (and, yes, I realize the inherently illogical nature of having pushable crates but not pushable furniture), and there's an area where it's necessary for the player to push crates in order to access a secret area. I had to mess around with the options for a long time, because I found that the player could get stuck in there.

Also, as Enjay said, the crates can be made pushable because they have a square plan view, and don't rely on invisible bridge things or invisible 3D sectors to provide blocking.

Finally, if you wish to place other models on top of a given model (e.g., ashtray on top of a credenza), you need to use an invisible 3D sector. This makes the model unpushable.
