I'm a bit disappointed by that conclusion, but to be fair, I haven't encountered enough nightmares in released mods to get a solid understanding of their behavior. I only tested them in places and was indeed a bit annoyed by their total intangibility when stealth (invisibility is OK if I can shoot them to death) and persistence. I don't think the Nightmare will reappear in TSoZD anyway, at least not with the old behavior... the complete invisibility doesn't really make this monster fun to fight.
However, they might be good in crossfires, when you have to focus against other monsters and be on constant movement so no nightmare can scratch you, while you're shooting the threatening visible monsters firing at you. Anyway, it's unnerving to hear a monster you can't see or attack but they can see and bite you. Default Doom doesn't have such monsters, so they add to gameplay if included. I think I'll use nightmare-like monsters in hypothetical mods and give the player a fair chance to react. (EDIT: Hexen has those stalkers, though. Only thing is, they're visibly limited to a pool, whereas nightmares are free)
