[r1681] Hexen: the player jumps too high

Postby printz » Fri Jun 26, 2009 1:48 pm

I've noticed that in ZDoom Hexen you can jump taller ledges. You can't do so in normal Hexen. The upper climbing height is 69 in Hexen and 76 in ZDoom Hexen.

I think this one's a compat option, if it even gets fixed.

I'm not surprised. There was a bug in the gravity code which made Randy use a higher jump speed than Hexen originally had. Now that this bug is fixed none of these 'adjustments' work properly anymore...

It may break whatever hypothetic ZDoom Hexen maps may rely on it, but really... as he jumps now, the player character acts like a feather.

The only Hexen ZDoom map that has been released since the recent changes in the gravity code is Codenium Red's Necrosis.

Wolfen may also be affected - as may Resurrection of Chaos - but I don't remember jumping being a major factor in either. These 3 are apparently really the only ZDoom/Hexen projects i existence.

But when was it fixed?

Given that the original JumpZ now gives the original amount of jumpability, I see no reason to keep the higher values, which were used specifically to get the same height that was present in Hexen. That they now cause higher jumping is not intended.

If this ever winds up messing with any of the three mentioned wads, we can just compatibility-check them and change the setting if needed, worst-case scenario.
