Decals aren't affected by fog

Postby Blue Shadow » Thu May 31, 2012 2:06 pm

I get the feeling that this's a well known issue (hence, I didn't put it in the bugs forum), since it exists all the way back to version 2.3.1 of ZDoom and maybe even older. So, I apologize if it has been brought up before, but I'm just curious as to why it hasn't been resolved yet.

As you can see from the screenshot below, the fog doesn't affect decals. They don't "fade" the far you're to them like other things do (textures, sprites, etc.)

Note that this only happens with ZDoom. They work well with GZDoom.

Sure looks like a bug to me. The question is, whether it's fixable. The software renderer has some limitations and I have no idea how decal drawing with fog is affected by it.

It is affected by fog. Unfortunately, precision problems arise from working in a paletted colorspace, so it's not always obvious. A good place to see that it does indeed work is Doom 2 MAP01's starting room in conjunction with testfade.

This would probably work a lot better with a truecolor renderer.
