There's a reason ZDoom labels it "Cripple sound system for silent BFG trick."

Did vanilla let you silence the BFG by stepping over a pickup? As I recall, only wall-using or long drops are mentioned in the guide that described the trick.

And that's why this won't be investigated any further. The 'silent BFG trick' option really cripples the sound system to a degree that several things stop working properly.
