Heretic unused data

Post by RaVeN-05 »

Well i opened heretic.wad and found these graphic lumps, they seems not used in game:
FACEA0, FACEA1, FACEA2, FACEA3 - the face of Corvus, he is like Kirt the protagonist from ShadowCaster game.
FACEB0, FACEB1, FACEB2, FACEB3 - dead Corvus, skulls, also colored (Green,Yellow,Red,Blue) did it for deathmatch planned?
LAME - the gold word LAME for what it planned to? deathmath? like SkullTag/Zandronum do is write message "Llama" when you kill someone who stay at chat.

Also did you know another lumps that is unused?

The FACE graphics are used in the scoreboard. However, this is not carried over by ZDoom, despite the presence of some dead code.

LAME is the "TIME SUCKS". Waste over an hour in vanilla Heretic before finishing a level, and you should get it.

Actually, no.
Heretic's intermission code can handle a real time display with hours.

"LAME" is a placeholder for when the status bar tries to draw a number <-9 which can only happen if someone collects a large amount of negative frags.

Yes i tested it all in dosbox + vanilla heretic
http://hexen.clan.su/_fr/8/1130857.png -> this how heretic looks at finish of deathmatch
http://hexen.clan.su/_fr/8/4575009.png -> for hexen used the same method
http://hexen.clan.su/_fr/8/5882879.png -> if you get less than -9 frags in deathmatch you will get mesaage LAME.

Thank you for replies its interesting stuff i never seen before =)

To be fair, if you somehow killed yourself that many times, you really are lame.

Oh I know. And it's not like that counter doesn't have space for three digits (or two and a negative), so I actually wonder if it wasn't a placeholder, per se, but a deliberate trolling by Raven. :P

It was most certainly deliberate. Ir precisely tells you what you are if you get there! :P

SELECTBO is used, it's the inventory selection box - the FX variants are different colours for the Hellstaff's powered attack, presumably for each player colour - red, blue, green and gold - the sliders would have been used in vanilla in the options, while in ZDoom it uses the CONFONT lump. I'm assuming the coloured life bar gems are for different players in multiplayer too, to coincide with the portrait used at the end of the round screen.

The SHRD sprites aren't used in vanilla, either. If you look closely, you can see them directly added to the Golem death sprites. The only thing they manage to do is get mixed up with Hexen's Shard sprites.

I don't think most of the background segments are used by ZDoom, either. Vanilla doom engines only redrew the parts of the status bar they needed to, usually involving slapping a blank background over numbers and redrawing the digits. ZDoom's current status bar code redraws the whole thing each tic/frame.

TINTTAB is only unused because Zdoom has its own strange method of transparency lookup. Unfortunately this method is less accurate at representing color and makes the smoke in Heretic look darker.
