Doom : The journey (32 or more maps idea)

Post by Freaklore1 »

Hello there, yes im new to the forum, but i've been playing Zdoom+GZdoom for a quite awhile now.

I decided to make this topic because this is a much bigger idea i had in mind and tought about it for a long time now, hear me out and tell me what you think of it.

Like i said,i've been playing Doom (and lots of mods) for years, then something struck me,an idea i felt when i played certain mods like 'Stronghold' or both Roger Ritenour maps 'Phobos' and 'Earth'.

What if there was a mod/wad that simulate the sensation of going on an epic journey across multiples locations.

When i played those mods (the ones i talked about above) and saw the locations, the textures of the skies and musics,it kinda make me want to try something similar but to a much deeper extent.

Here how it would go:

You start as a simple guy in his home somewhere pretty basic like in a town or a city or a lonely shack in the middle of nowhere. Then all hell is breaking loose all over the world,so you decide to go on a grand journey across multiples locations all over the world so you can find the source of all this mess.

Each locations will transit from one place next to the other with a little bit of foreshadowing in each of them.(for exemple you are in a level you can see something that foreshadow the next level you are going to be in)

We should also expect some difference in each levels (different textures),like in some places there is rain,in others snow or even fogs.

For the musics we should go with either ambient or anything that would give atmosphere to the levels. (Like 'Pharaoh' from map31 of TNT Evilution)

Once you quit the beginning level (a city for exemple) you find yourself in the sewers, then next level would be the outskirt of the city with forests and highway roads, then you end up in a back country village, then at the foot of a mountain that you will need to climb. (the mountain is foreshadowed in previous levels with the background/sky textures)

Once at the top of the mountain, you are in a snowy area, you explore till you find what seems to be ruins, you go inside and start going deeper and deeper inside the mountain until you find yourself in a system of caverns. At the end of the level you find an exit, then you find yourself at the opposite side of the mountain and you can see a beach.

You start going all the way right, walking along the beach until you find a fisherman village/port,exploring it you find a boat that will lead you to.....Antartica.Exploring the cold region you find an old abandoned installation, then you find yourself in a icy cavern with an ancient temple.

In the temple there is a teleporter that lead you to the Mojave dessert and the infamous Area 51 base,by finding another portal in the base you then find yourself in an underwater secret base, there you will find a submarine that will get you to a gigantic cavern hidden deep underwater with a temple inside it (is it the city of Atlantis ?),inside of it you find another portal that lead you to your final destination : Hell.

You fight lots of demons and finally stop the hellish invasion,it end with your character being teleported back home and enjoy a nice time to relax.

For the secrets levels or if we need to add other levels,we could add a level set in Egypt/pyramid and another one in a gothic castle,we could even add one set in Heaven or one where the character has a nightmare and must explore a hellish version of his hometown.

So what do you guys think, would this be interesting ?

I also tought about a sequel with your character going from Earth to the moon, then from one planet to the other, exploring different galaxies, the title would be 'The Journey 2 : Beyond And Further'.

Here's the story plot and maps descriptions (edited here for those who didnt saw it) :

So here is a list consisting of the levels. For the moment its only what i have in mind, but with time we might add more levels. (its done,we have 32 levels, unless you want to make some changes here and there)

Map1: Home (city)
Map2: Sewers
Map3: City Outskirts
Map4: The forest
Map5: The village
Map6: Mountain Ascension (exit to Gothic Castle)
MAp7: Mountain Top (or Snowy Peak)
Map8: The ruins
Map9: The caverns (filled with lava)
Map10: The beach
Map11: The seaside port (fisherman village)
Map12: Antartic Landscape
Map13: The abandoned installation
Map14: Icy Caverns
Map15: Frozen temple
Map16: The Mojave dessert
Map17: Old western Town
Map18: the mines
Map19: the canyons
Map20: The base/research labs (area 51)
Map21: Underwater base
Map22: Aquatic Caverns (a cavern with water here and there)
Map23: Atlantean Temple (a temple inside the aquatic caverns,so there's also water here and there)
Map24: The Oasis
Map25: The ancient city (Ancient Egypt themed city)
Map26: The Pyramid
Map27: Heaven's gates (Hell is trying to invade Heaven, fight and push back the invasion)
Map28: Hell (exit to The Nightmare)
Map29: Hell part 2
Map30: The final Battle
Secret map 1 : Gothic Castle
Secret map 2 : The Nightmare (Hell version of map 1)

Map 1 to map 11 are all sets in 1 same region, after that you take a boat in map 11 to reach map 12,then map 15,20,23 and 26 have teleporters to reach those next locations/regions,also map 21 has a submarine to reach map 22.

I've just tried Phocas Island 2,nice mod you made, but what im thinking is something further than just an island.(exploring every kind of locations on Earth)

Also it will be linear with exits to secret levels instead of a hub world.

Another thing that inspired me for this idea is from Skyrim, when you need to go up the mountain to reach the temple of the elders i felt like i was going on a journey, that i was actually going somewhere,a sense of progression.

For anyone who read that for the music it should be something ambient i was not reffering to sounds effects like winds or waterfall sounds.

I was saying that the soundtrack should be made mostly out of ambient musics to give a chilling, dreadfull, mysterious and kind of sad atmosphere to the game, something kind of like this.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PGELu62IRko or this version maybe https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vXudta_pu_g

there is also this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KYInDD3OHZQ or this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kzqrVL9bUz8

Those are a fews exemples.

Of course there can also be some variation from time to time like something more majestic for any of the ruins/temples levels and something more dark for the Hell levels.

A question:Is this even possible to make a megawad where most levels have all different textures ?

Anyway,if someone is interested in the idea you can go ahead,i dare you to take on the challenge.

Just dont ask me for much help except giving some suggestions and consultations, since i dont know how to make maps or mods,im just a player.

The cool thing about Doom is how easy it is to map and make mods. I recommend grabbing hold of Doom Builder 2 / GZDoom Builder and looking up Doom Builder 2 tutorials on how to map. It's quite easy. Also, most of the modders here have experience with mapping. Just some of us specialize in one field than the other. Rarely do we work on both with equal skill.

I could try but it would take sometime to learn to make maps and even more to learn how to implement textures and even make a soundtrack for the mod.

I hoped maybe that some modders could join and help making this megawad idea come true.

Also,is it possible to make lots of levels who have each a different theme ?

Yes. You can add whatever actors, textures, maps, music, sound, sprites, models, voxels as you want. And you can make every map in different theme. Custom hud, textures, monsters, items, even player. You can make animated intermission like in Knee-Deep in Zdoom. And I am interested in this project if i can join. Multiple different monsters, items and textures you can find at Realm667.

For the mod i tought it would be a better idea if it was only focused on the levels and musics,if you want to add monsters you can put a certains type depending on the locations.

For the weapons on the other hand,i prefer to keep it vanilla (normal),so if you want to have different weapons, you can always put weapon mods while playing with this mod.

This mod only need 3 things.

First we need 32 or more levels with each one or a few sets having different textures depending on the locations. (urban, forests, mountains, caves, dessert, snowy regions, water filled locations, ruins and others)

Secondly we need a soundtrack for the game (for the levels, for the main menu, for the intermission, for the intro and outro and one for the ending),each music should be in a similar style to the choices i put in one of the comment i made (check on the 1st page for the comment),i chose that style of music because i wanted to give a sensation of deep calm/serenity to the journey in wich the players will go and also turning it into a soothing experience.

And finally,we need to add some additional things like weather effects, different time of the day (as your character progress trough the levels the time of the day change from dawn to day to dusk to night),we can add some additional monsters that will fit in the locations.

Thats all we need.

You can join the project if you want, this project will need to be made by a group of peoples,im only here to share the idea and be a consultant for the project.

Easy to make mods? Yes. Easy to make good mods? No. I've been trying for 4 years, and I still make crappy maps. Gameplay mods are easier, but that is not what he wants.
