Any WAD with custom monsters and "classic" feel?

Post by LkMax »

Hi everybody,
I'm new here, blablabla and all that stuff.

"navigating" trought youtube videos I found there's some WADs with new monsters and bosses that add more variety to the game but preseve the classic Doom style at the same time (well, most monsters at least), but aparently these wads are just to show them off.

So I thought: is there good user-made maps/episodes with new monsters? I know there are excellent vanilla Doom wads (like >this<) but it's kinda hard to find new maps/episodes with new elements to DooM that aren't TCs.

Well, a game with new monsters, but a "classic" level set seems to be rather rare to me. I searched through my whole Doom folder and couldn't really find one that fit what you asked. Most on the mods that have new monsters take advantage of the many other features that ZDoom has to offer, like slopes, new weapons, ACS and more.

There are some excellent mods such as The Ultimate Torment and Torture ( Here. ) that make great use of new monsters, a few new weapons, and other features, but retain a lot of the "feel" that Doom does (In my opinion, anyways). Another good example is Knee Deep in ZDoom ( Here. ), which attempts to update the game, but have it feel the same as well.

In all honesty, though, I can't seem to find one that meets your exact specifications.

Maybe I wasn't very clear. I don't mind some new textures and engine tricks, as long as they're not "joke" or "cartoony" mods and retain the dark/tech theme of the game.

I'll check those mods, thanks.
EDIT: Cool mods indeed :) the first one even remind me of Quake, another of my favoriteds from iD, haha.

Obituary and S.T.R.A.I.N., two classic vanilla WADS that come with new monsters and weapons while largely retaining the Doom 2 feel. Both come with incredibly obtuse and obsolete "installers" that require a bit of ingenuity to make work in a modern OS. I don't remember the procedures off the bat (It's been a while), but if you have a problem with either, just post it here and we'll figure it out.

With STRAIN you don't have to, there is a jive and fix wad file that you can just drag over. Hopefully I can find it on my HDD for you.

Standard issue response.

If you want a .WAD that combines custom monsters with Doom's own inimitable style, you can't go far wrong with these. E1-style techbases and Hell levels with a powerful E3 vibe.

thanks for the replys,
I installed Strain successfully via cmd, just don't know how to install Obituary the right way (with the custom guns and all).
Will check these Titan wads later.

Getting Obituary installed is pretty much impossible these days because it uses crap tools to do it.

Blame the Powers That Be that rule the /idgames archive which refuse to allow a fixed version in because the makers put a 'may not modify this package' clause onto the mod - and so far nobody had any success contacting them.

DSDA has a sane package. Look in the "fixed" folder of the zip.

Too make using playing STRAIN less of a hassle here is a link to a fixed version after unpacking you just have to drag both files to ZDoom. http://www.doomwadstation.com/main/strain.html
EDIT: Regarding the "bugs" that have said to have appeared in various maps, I have never encountered them with later versions of ZDoom.
