Disembodied arms (AKA, solutions for widescreens)

Postby Xtyfe » Sat Apr 07, 2012 1:53 am

I recently bought a new laptop, it has a 17.3" display with 1920x1080@60hz native.

I was aware before this that, especially for hexen that some of the first person weapons as well as the status bar were not widescreen friendly. I know that some have made widescreen friendly versions of these things however not everything has been done yet (afaik). So I would like to opt to run the game at a 4:3 aspect letterboxed. However I see no such option in ZDoom for this and I was wondering if anyone has managed to get around this in some other way outside of the game?

I tend to just run the game windowed, which should in theory allow you to run the 4:3 resolutions at the correct aspect.

Just run it in a 4:3 resolution. You can probably set your monitor to display those modes letterboxed instead of stretching them.

Well (sorry for not being much helpful), if your monitor is 8:5, it will fit nicely with Doom's original 320x200 or multiple thereof. Sure, the heads will become more square than usual, but then again, the circles will be CIRCLES, not ellipses, and the squares will be SQUARE.

Well, 16:10 (8:5) is pretty close to 16:9 ironically :p

While my monitor itself has no options for letterboxing due to it being a laptop, my nvidia display drivers do :D I have set it to not stretch when using letterboxing

My previous OS somehow blocked that.

Fortunately Win 7 x64 works like a charm.
Also, get the 301.24 beta drivers, NAW.

I notice that Nvidia's drivers aren't as keen to give you those options for some reason if you're using a different type of video cable. I noticed some options missing if I used a VGA cable instead of a DVI or HDMI.

Right, DVI and HDMI have those capabilities while the older VGA doesn't

I'm know about nothing about how one or another cable looks, but the weird thing is that it didn't want to give me those options in Win7 x86, on x64 - however, it worked just fine.
