How many of you will be converted?

Post by Tarks »

After the release of Doom 3 how many of you will absorb its new mapping ways, REAL 3D objects, and all the stuff with it, then move on.

The only reason i look at these forums is to read what a Certain distant friend of mine writes, laugh to myself about the release of .64 (respectfully of course. . .) and look at all the little squabbles you lot seem to have, it's cute.

Anyway honestly after Doom 3 ships out how many of you will reduce to playing doom 2 to remind yourself how fun it was, don't want a flame war, just want to make you think 8-)

This is silly because if we were going to leave Doom for something better we wuold have done so when Duke 3D came out! There is already enough good games to map for, but we stick to doom... so, it's unlikely that any of us are going to leave Doom for Doom3 just because its better.

Thats my POV, others might be different. I'm proably gpoing to start mapping for some 3D engines soon because I now feel more confident to do so, but I won't leaveDoom behind... just because Doom is pritty unique...

Duke 3D Sucked. It was funny for 10 minutes and then it got old. But Lexus' logic works anyway, since there have been a number of other good games since.

I won't be going anywhere.

The people that do go away, I will probably be happy to see go.

For me personally, Doom III will suck unless iD brings out a converter program that will convert any DOOM or DOOM II map into its own format, irrespective of how good it is on its own. Apart from the new environment, DOOM III seems to me just "more of the same" and the community have so-far made much more interesting maps than iD ever did (apart from E4, most of which was pretty good). Of course such a conversion will be imperfect but it immediately gives DOOM III thousands of maps to play while mappers create new maps.

It also should make converting the old-but-goodies easier. Perhaps we should have a bet on which gets remade in DOOM III first. UAC_DEAD? DOOM2MAP07? Anything by Jon Anderson (Dr Sleep)?

I think id should take the lead in that.

Wasn't Episode 4 done by people of the community (or a specific person) and commissioned by id?

As for leaving (Z)Doom -- pffft. I've been a fan of Doom for as long as I can remember (which apparently goes back to when Doom first came out), and I won't be leaving it anytime soon. The deceptive simplicity behind the game design and play draws me back every time. And a converter that could import Doom/II maps into Doom III would definitely kick butt.

The blasphemy in this statement is appalling. Go to your room and think about what you've done, young man.

Martin: Give me one good reason you'd want to convert non-3D levels with crappy low-res graphics, blocky and simplistic (by comparison to Doom 3) design, statically-lit levels to Doom 3. There's no good reason, and in all likelihood the simplest ambush in a Doom level would overwhelm Doom 3's graphics engine (and player!) as it's not designed to handle lots of enemies on screen at once.

I once played a conversion of Doom's shareware episode in Quake (or was it Quake 2, I don't remember). Actually, I found it well done and fun to play. But of course, it's not real Doom anymore.

And Duke3D is one of the best FPS game ever, imho. And since you ask, there actually IS a converter for Doom maps on the Duke3D CD. ;)

I'm sure, no future game would make ZDoom obsolete. I'm not yet even sure if I'm going to buy Doom3.

Lexus' inference was that Duke 3D was better than Doom. That is why the statement is blasphemous.

I will certainly play Doom 3, but I won't move on editing-wise because all I know how to do is weapon mods in BEX. Learning C just to make a mod is not what I want to do.

I think Duke3d is better than vanilla Doom. ZDoom makes Doom better, though.

Duke3D is technically better than Doom, there's no doubt about that. But what does it help when it never has that special look and feel of Doom?

Jon Anderson did one but I seem to remember that most of the rest of the mappers on E4 are closely connected with id. According to The Page of Doom:

E4M1 : HELL BENEATH by American McGee
E4M2 : PERFECT HATRED by John Romero
E4M3 : SEVER THE WICKED by Shawn Green
E4M4 : UNRULY EVIL by American McGee
E4M5 : THEY WILL REPENT by Tim Willits/Theresa Chasar
E4M6 : AGAINST THEE WICKEDLY by John Romero
E4M7 : AND HELL FOLLOWED by John Anderson
E4M8 : UNTO THE CRUEL by Shawn Green
E4M9 : FEAR by Tim Willits

Maybe it is just me, but I feel that E4 is by far the best set of maps ever created by iD (including in Doom2) or people closely associcated with them. Jon Anderson is a Doom God, so he doesn't really count as "One of the Community"; it is rare for him to make a map that sucks :)
