Also, an addendum to the first post: XChat and Mibbit are also very good viable choices for IRC clients. I recommend the former because Perl scripting rocks socks and the latter because it's quick and dirty, no installation needed (although it can tend to be quite slow. <_>)

Heh. It's certainly much easier to manage quick, friendly conversation upon as opposed to a forum. If you can set up correctly for DCCs, it gets even better. :3

Heh, I wonder if there's any point in me posting just to say I'm on the channel.

Well, a bit late to be wondering, about it, I guess.

I've added X-Chat and Mibbit to the first post.

Quite the contrary, actually. It seems to outlive it's predecessors, mostly because it has a ton of clients, a fairly good number of large networks, and by far it is the simplest chat protocol.

I'm giving it a go for the time being... no idea how active I'll be though. We'll see over time.

Added to the first post for registering and logging in, which is called identifying.

Well, yesterday we got a total of about 20 users on the channel. I'm very surprised and I never thought that this would work great. =D

When I find a chat client that eats so little resources that it really is completely unnoticeable, I'll probably be on. mIRC eats up too much resources, in my opinion.

On my machine, mIRC is only using 4 MB. Unless you're dealing with a system that has less than 128 MB of RAM, I don't see why that's an issue.

I'm talking more along the lines of intermittent CPU cycles, not memory. In my experience it causes noticeable stutters when playing games, but that was also a long time ago, too...

Have you tried XChat? HydraIRC? Or even the Java or the Mibbit EsperNet IRC clients?

XChat, not extensively.
HydraIRC, no.
Anything java is out of the question - just the java engine itself eats up cycles like crazy. It's very inefficient.

My fairly old set up had no problems running the version of XChat linked here alongside games, Windows Live and Windows Media Player, so I'd say that should be a reasonable choice.

Unless you're using a particularly old system, I doubt X-Chat or mIRC will have a noticable effect on your game performance.
