Top 3 Favourite WADs?

As a mapper I reckon it'd be helpful for all of us WAD makers to know what it is people like, and as a Doom player I'm intruiged as to what people's favourites are (to see if I'd like to play them too :P )... plus I'm bored and nosey! Explenations of your choices would be nice :)

So, what are your top 3 WADs of all time? Mine are as follows:

1) ZDCMP Take #1 - Wonderful huge map that generally takes me an hour to play. Its filled with such diversity in monsters, locales and battles that it never seems to get old for me. Plus it shows a great many cool ZDoom features, which is always a plus!

2) Doom: The Rebirth (by Vader) - A good looking but not particularly high detail megawad with new textures, sprites and a very good classic style of gameplay. One of very few megawads that I've played that I could honestly score above the original Doom in terms of sheer fun. Also cool is the fact that it only needs Doom2.exe to run.

3) Revolution! (by T.V.) - I only played this recently, but the simple fun and highly creative architecture really made my day. I can see why its quite so highly regarded. Although the bug in the first map with the yellow key is a slight pain, that was the only problem I had with it, and again I found it a lot more fun (and replayable) than the original IWADs.

As you can see, I like WADs that I can play for a while but progress through swiftly and hold a lot of variety and a few new things. Much as I enjoy the challenge of mapsets like Alien Vendetta, they aren't the sort of thing I could go back to and play again as the maps are either too long, or there are just too many monsters to make progression swift enough. Fast arcade-y gameplay is what got me into Doom in the first place, and kept me there.

Well, since i've been playing Doom, i've seen a lot of wads that i consider pretty good. But since i started to play ZDoom, i saw stuff i'd never thought to see in Doom. Most of this stuff includes the first zdoom wads played by me. However, as time went by, i saw the birth of excellent ZDoom wads that i liked a lot.
First of all, i want to say that my favourite stuff is only for ZDoom. :P

1) The ZDCMP Take #1: i still remember the day that i downloaded it. I was impressed to see such stuff and effects in Doom. Plus that map was huge and funny to play, involving also some ACS puzzles that just weren't possible with plain Doom. So this is my favourite ZDoom map.

2) Thunderpeak (by Vader) : this is one of the maps that will make you go "EPIC!". The atmosphere and the relative low amount of monster in this big map made it one of the most beautiful maps i've ever played. Plus the architecture shows how much powerful ZDoom is. The good point is that the map does not only focus on detail, but also on gameplay: it was pretty funny to play because there wasn't a sheer amount of monsters that slaughter you, but a moderate amount that will make you particularly enjoy this.

3) Warpzone (by Phobus) : while not everyone may agree on this choice, this is one of the most interesting maps i've played from the concept point of view. It consists of a central hub with 4 teleporters that take you into 4 different areas with different themes (rocky, hell, techbase, urban), and they're all linked because of some items that you need to look for to get forth. I gotta say that this map got me in gameplay more than any other map, and it required me more than an hour to complete the first time i've played it. The monster amount is big, but it is justified by the dimensions of the map. Challenging and good-looking. It's worth a look IMO.

Don't know if my post is as big as others but....

1) Knee Deep in ZDoom- I don't know why i just really like it, every time i go back and play it i always notice something i didnt before, but ive got the maps basically memorized. The gameplay is decent the detail is the amount i wish i could do(hehe) and plus i cant even remember the last time i played it without any weapon mods....

2) Phobos: Anomoly Reborn- (theres a pattern but this is the last) this is one wad that i could possibly not get very tired of just because of the time and effort put into it and the amazing look and feel for it not being in hexen format, if this were to be remade this would be number one on my list(hint to creator....oh)

3)This one was really hard but for now im going to say Ultimate Torment and Torture as Demon Eclipse isnt officially done yet, it has monsters, classes, voice acting yeah alot of stuff....

take that for what you will know if you excuse me im going to atempt a bit of mapping :ninja:

Wait, since when does a map's appearance ingame tell you anything about what format it's stored in? Image

As for my own favorites, it's hard to pin down the three I'd consider best since there are quite a few that I'd consider to be exceptionally good...for now I'll just go with Suspended in Dusk, RTC-3057 Hub 1, and...hmm. I love Thunderpeak, Crucified Dreams, and Scythe 2; I can't choose a third one :(

edit:

Okay, but since when are either of those things required to make a map have an "amazing look and feel"? If you really think that, I think you might have some catching up to do on non-ZDoom wads...

1) Action Doom - Need I say more? :P

2) Community Is Falling 3 - I love big adventures, and the dialogue makes this a lot of fun. Also, advanced scripting examples on wheels!

3) Cyberdreams - My favorite vanilla WAD. The fact that it plays so well, with better puzzles than most ultra super bling-bling ACS-addled WADs I see nowadays, is mind-blowing.

1) The Island by Jason Farlow, because I love island maps.
2) NeoDoom, mostly because of the city maps. It was one of my first played Zdoom wads, also.
3) Titan 2, because... everything about it is amazing.

I don't think I have favourites as such, there's too many different wads of radically different types, but I find myself cooping on AV and HR2 all the time these days, although I wouldn't say they are the best wads ever, but they seem to be holding my attention the longest. I know that I don't particularly like Action Doom II or Eternal which people seem to find great, Action Doom II was interesting, well made, and unique, but it wasn't really that fun for me, and Eternal Doom just seems to be giant frustrating ugly empty labyrinths
I have fond memories of Neodoom though :)

1) Ghostbusters Doom2 (by Scuba Steve) - at the time it was made, it was one of the most ambitious mods that actually got anywhere. It was fun to see lots of custom resources and using Boom's limited features to create such an interesting mod. It's also the mod that inspired me to start modding for myself. Needless to say, this thing will probably stay at the top for a long time.

2) Action Doom2 (by Scuba Steve) - A very non-doom like doom mod. With almost all original graphics, music, and some sounds. The environment are pretty convincing in doom standards and gameplay was fun in its own way. This thing scores huge, personally, in terms of creativity - peating down hookers that attack with their hair, or emo-kids, with a bottle cracks me up.

3) Ghouls vs. Humans (by CutmanMike) - Not really a single-player experience, but it is the best MP mod i've played (EVER). Simple, humourous, and creative - this thing has everything that I ask for in mod and more! :D

@Eriance:You know I really wasn't able to get into the Ghostbusters wad.I think the mapper that Inspired me to start mapping was Laz Rojas.

After looking at my fav wads I've realized that I'm pretty oldschool lol.
