Palette Hack Challenge!

Post by Xaser »

Well, chalk one up for randomness. After reading Nash's thread on colormaps, a crazy idea struck me...

We've all seen wads where the palette is changed around to give wads some personality (NJMarine, RTC-3057, uh... Zen too), but as far as I know I've never seen one where the palette has been turned topsy-turvy upside-down, creating something really original. I had a go with it and had some trippy results. Funny how playing with a different color scheme can make things seem so bloody different.

So, why not give this a shot? I challenge you to create a simple palette modification that makes DooM feel crazy-different (without being dumb--tutti-frutti is overrated!) and post it here for everyone to gawk/laugh/freak out at. :P

To start, nab this image and your favorite image-editing tool or alternatively this nifty little program (thanks Shin and Spidey!) to shift the colors around to your liking. Use the linked tool to export the palette as an .ACT, and import it into a wad with XWE as the PLAYPAL lump. Voila!

If enough people submit things, I might wind up turning this into a contest of sorts, but we'll have to see how things turn out first. :P

To start, here's my 'submission', "Coldwave" I call it. I pumped up all the blues/purples and it wound up making DooM have a strange, surreal "chilled" look. The purple doesn't even seem that far out of place, somehow. Nab the attachment and give it a whirl if you dare. :P

HueShift Deluxe. All color ranges (browns, reds, etc) were tweaked induvidually to add more blue and lower the saturation, then I got bored and knocked the Hue 180 degrees.

Also, for more fun, take the image and knock the hue 180 degrees again, and you'll see what my blue-shifted pallete looked like.

Heh, it's quite funny, I downloaded a couple of these and thought "huh? I don't see what's so special". Then I realised I was playing in GZdoom with a mod loaded that had a load of paletted png graphics appearing in their own colours. :laff:

Nice work people. Some interesting stuff.

Here's mine, I call it Heatwave.

I basically took the Doom palette into Paint Shop Pro and screwed with the color balance so that it would shift the palette into a lot of very hot colors, almost completely eliminating the green and blues and turning most of it into reds, oranges, and yellows. Some graphics look a little glitchy like this, but it makes Hell look a lot more like Hell. Try playing it with Demon Eclipse or Memento Mori 2.

I like that heatwave one. It's a shame it isn't possible to specify a palette per level in mapinfo or something.

Hmm. I wonder what the original pallete I made (before I did the hue shift) would look like on that map.
Phobus, give this a try, I kind of want to see the result

Here you go. These are a few screenshots of my own Christmas compilation WAD using the Zdoom based Xmas99 engine and your winter colours palette:

http://www.rowand.myzen.co.uk/xmas2000/

[edit]Actually, I guess I could upload the project somewhere. It's just a compilation and (slight) modification I did of a bunch of Christmas levels and sprites so that they would come together in one longer Christmas story. It's very oldschool because most of the levels were just old ones I found on idgames.

It uses the xmas99 engine wich is based off Zdoom 1.17c. It's needed to make the imp snowballs behave properly and to generate particle snow.

Damn, I can't believe it was over 7 years ago that I put this thing together. :?

Anyway, do people want it?

Interesting. I made the pallete for a wintry setting, but I didn't think it would have worked so well (I hadn't tested it in a wintry environment, and it looks a little odd on, say, E3M1) :D
