Changing Refresh Rate?

Post by top »

Is there a variable to change the display refresh rate in ZDoom? Right now my monitor is having to flicker to another refresh rate when I load the port. My current desktop refresh rate is 85Hz.

Thanks!

Not that I know of. You're probably playing zdoom at a different resolution than your desktop setting, and your display driver is using a different refresh rate for the zdoom resolution. You can probably adjust driver or video card settings to control the refresh rate.

Set the resolution to that of your desktop. (I play at it and don't have that problem) Also try turning on Vertical Sync.

Just to add to what Lamneth suggested; try turning on vertical sync from within ZDoom by opening the console and typing vid_vsync 1.

I always have this turned on because I find it annoying that ZDoom renders at 900 FPS all the time.

No point in even having 900 FPS when your monitor can only show it at whatever its refresh rate/response time is.

Thank you all for your replies!

Right now my desktop screen res is @ 1920x1200. And I also play ZDoom @ 1920x1200. I also have vertical synchronization enabled but the refresh rate ZDoom goes by I believe isn't my desktop's refresh rate (Which is 85Hz).

I believe remembering I had an older monitor that maxed out @ 1600x1200 with a 60Hz refresh rate. I remember switching from ZDoom and back to my desktop without my monitor having to change settings or "flicker".

I'm thinking ZDoom runs the refresh rate @ 60Hz? But then when I run Vsync, my capped fps is 85, same as my monitor's desktop refresh rate.

I know it's different code and engine stuff, but in Quake4 and all the other games like quake3 and such, I set my display refresh to the desktop's refresh rate and I'm able to switch windows without the flickering IF the game has the same res as my destkop.

ZDoom just lets DirectDraw/3D use whatever refresh rate it wants. If you're capping at 85 Hz with vsync on, then your refresh rate is 85 Hz.

Why does my monitor have to flicker every time I load ZDoom when the res is the same as the desktop res?

I assume, your desktop is not set to 8bpp. Your drivers most probably are set to different refresh rates for different color depth.
