Rare? No longer, apparently.Arch-Vile: One of the worst of a bad lot. You can't think of enough rotten things to say about him. He's fast, hard to kill, casts spells, and resurrects dead monsters! At least these suckers are rare.
Doom 2 Wad
The archvile is just one of those enemies that is more useful as a "specialist" instead of just another monster for the player to fight and kill. They can be extremely useful in maps where they are let loose into areas that the player has already cleared. I've seen several maps where the archvile was placed right behind a balcony packed with shotgun and chaingun zombies. Although the player couldn't see him to kill him, the archvile could keep resurrecting the zombies as they were killed, creating sort of a "kill zone" courtyard.
I've noticed that the revenant is talked about a lot - people seem to hate it when map authors pack rooms full of these guys. I don't think anyone would need more than two in a room - when the player tries to shake one fireball by circle-strafing, he'll be pelted by a fireball coming from the opposite direction. I hate it when I clear a room full of the bastards, only to look behind and see that twenty or thirty heat-seeking fireballs need to be evaded before I can continue.
I think that there is a -HUGE- difference between Doom 2 and Doom monsters. Whereas before, in Doom, the enemies all did the same thing (move and shoot, move and shoot, etc.), the Doom 2 enemies had more unique ways of attacking. The mancubus flamethrower, for example, fired in a more ballistic and gratuitous manner, making it possible to catch strafing players. In fact, none of the Doom 2 enemies (except the chaingunner and hell knight) just attacked, if you know what I mean (and you probably don't). This makes it possible for clever (or sadistic) map authors to create a serious challenge using only one strong enemy and a few weak ones.

I believe that there was no shareware of Doom 2. But even if you can't decide on buying it (after all the positive feedback you got here), at least you can always look at the monsters for free. Right over here:

(Yes, they're not animated, so what?)

There used to be a site which had pseudo biological information on all the Doom enemies. IIRC it was presented as the results of a survey team assigned to studying the monsters. Anyone got a link?
As for people who say they have a Doom2 shareware WAD, they are either mistaken or lying. I don't think there was ever any kind of shareware or demo version for Doom2. Doom1 and Heretic had shareware episodes, Hexen had a demo hub and Strife had a demo mini mission, but nothing for Doom2.

Try http://www.planetdoom.com/doom . They have info on all of the monsters, weapons, items, etc.
For the most part, I would definitely recommend Doom 2. Most FPS gamers, even those that play only newer games like UT2003 or Q3A, have Doom 2 in their collections, simply because it marked a huge leap forward in computer gaming evolution.
EDIT: The stupid period got in the way . The link should work now.
Enjay, I think I found a link to the site you were talking about. Very interesting:

There is a version of Doom II that DeHackEd deliberately refuses to work with the EXE file if you load it -- this is the now-infamous "Doom II Pirate" version. Somehow just before release a demo or beta copy of Doom II turned up on the internet. Maybe this is what people are thinking of when they talk about a shareware Doom II.JangoFett wrote:Are you SURE there is no Doom 2 Wad? Because lots of people say they got the Doom 2 Shareware....
Yup, that's the one I was on about. Thanks.Liam wrote:Enjay, I think I found a link to the site you were talking about. Very interesting:

I love that page. Cool stuff there.Liam wrote:http://www.doom2.net/single/monsters.html
The rest of the site is pretty off though. http://www.doom2.net/single/weaponfaq.html http://www.doom2.net/single/ugfaq.txt I find that to be terribly inaccurate, especially the information about the BFG.
