OSJC's In hand Key sprites

Post by osjclatchford »

*UPDATE*
OSJCkeycard2.PNG
V2.0(hands by Medricel)
*END*

OK So I've already had this in spriting carnival but as I have explanded on it I've started its own thread:
the basic idea is, again, another idea stolen from Duke 3D: in-hand keycards!
keycards.PNG
keycards.PNG (25.75 KiB) Viewed 2654 times
at first I was quite unsure how the decorate would work for this because, as I'm sure you all know, the keycard-doors in DooM do not have the be physically unlocked, simply opening if you have the key but after talking to Uboa he decided to have a go at getting the keycards in game. what a legend eh?

heres the wad: https://dl.dropbox.com/u/13049328/real_keycards.wad its quite tasty!
Uboa:
...The scripting and everything that I used is VERY map-specific, and I rigged it for maps like the one I've included. All it takes is the ACS script in the map, which could probably be worked into something like a library with some help.Aside from that, I finished it and it's sort of hacky. It works nonetheless, and I think you'll enjoy it. It has support for all three keycards, and doesn't require any pickups besides the vanilla Doom ones...
He also suggested/promised that if I made the skullkey graphics he'd code these as well.

ok, then:

Have at it!

enjoy

Nice work, I think these will come in handy. It adds a nice touch to the realism, have you thought about submitting these too Realm 667? I'm also quite intrigued as too how the in hand skull keys will work, guess I'll have to find out, good stuff.

glad you like them!
as for the workings, I imagine they'll work the same as the cards, just bring them up into view of the door and add suitably creepy/gothic noise and woosh the door opens...

I feel this is really more appropriate as a Resources thread. If you have any objections about this change, let me know.

Maybe Flynn should just pull it back and toss it at the door.

I think some people could find handless versions of both keys useful as well. Other than that, very nice.

Guess what, OSJC? I released an update. It didn't take me long, really.

Instead of tossing the skull at the door or holding it up, I tried something different. I adapted the old script more to a skullkey option, and it works perfectly. Rather than doing any of the previous things, the Doom marine impales the skull with a stationary pole next to the door. This triggers the door, thus opening it. I was thinking something more along the lines of an Indiana Jones trap when I did this, something incredibly simple that would trigger something else. Try it out and see what you think. There are some new arguments that the script takes: Door tag, Key type, and Pole tag. The "pole tag" only needs to be used if you're working with skullkeys. In which case, this would be the tag of the pole next to the door. By giving the pole a tag, it actually changes the sprite depending on which skull you use.

Here's a download link.

Great, however I think the keycards are waay too big, i always imagined them the size of credit cards...

The demo WAD is surprisingly effective. The skulls work particularly well. I think using a swipe slot beside the doors rather than just offering the key up to the door would be nicer for the cards. As for size, perhaps they are a little big but I imagine them as slightly larger. So, somewhere between their current size and a credit card.

[edit] and possibly the skulls are a little small? (assuming they are meant to be the same as full-size human skulls)[/edit]

Excellent work!

Where did you get the hands from? Are they your own from a photograph?

Just for reference: my hand holding a skull that I, well, you know, just happened to have lying around.

size is always going to be up for discussion or change: look at the pickups both the skull and card keys are the same size...

so cards too big and skulls too small? open to any personal preferance
I always assumed the skullkeys were more like odd arcane crystal thingys so I've just sized them to match my keycards. I personally don't mind the way the skulls worked originally (doors just opening if you had them, they are magic after all) It's just the cards I liked the idea of, but Uboa suggested I do them and as he made the wad showing off my art I felt I owed him some.
Anyway, unless we can get the keycards to work without specific maps, I'm done with these now.
All I've really done is the two sprite-sheets, the code and wad with the pole thing is all Uboa's doing so any question about maps and coding etc are best sent to Uboa...

Oh, and FYI the hands were hacked together bits from the hand-reference-resource sheet thingy...

please feel free to edit and change and definately USE! if you want them, take them and as for credit? I cant speak for Uboa but I'm not too bothered but feel free to mention me if you do wish too! ;)

enjoy

I never figured Doom's skull keys were actual skull-size (despite how big they actually are in side-by-side sprite comparison), just little ornament-y things. Like the sort of stuff you'd hang on your Christmas Big Brown Tree.
