[Resource | Weapon] Thrasher for Strife *Update: V2*

I've always felt that Strife was missing the most important tool in any FPS arsenal: a shotgun. Thus, the Thrasher was born.

Given how tricky it is to add custom weapons to Strife, it replaces the standing assault gun pickup and uses the same ammo type as the Mauler. It basically acts like a slightly weaker version of the Mauler's primary fire, but uses half the ammo. Eriance's original Demon Eclipse shotgun seemed like a good fit, so I decided to recolor it and then add the Strife guy hands that JustinC had made for the shotgun used in Weasel's Strife mod. Further credits can be found inside of the .pk3 file.

Here's the sprite sheet I made for those that would rather use it for something else:

Edit 2:
Version 2 of the Thrasher has been released! It now takes accuracy and stamina into account. At the highest levels, there should be no weapon recoil, and the spread should be about as tight as Doom's shotgun.

Yes, I've always felt that Strife was missing a shotgun. In fact, for me, it was quite a big detraction from how the game (IMO) should have felt. Although some of the weapons are nice, that good honest staple of FPS game, the shotgun, was conspicuous by its absence.

I've often thought about making a level where the goal of the player was to retrieve an new weapon for the rebellion. The weapon would, of course, turn out to be a shotgun. With a slight hint of sarcasm, I would introduce it with a camera flying around the shotty and glorious music playing when the player entered the room where the shotty was kept.

I'd always just imagined the Doom shotgun in the game but this sprite is very nice too.

It would fit in a lot better with the other weapons if it wasn't so glossy.

But it's a still a nice edit.

There was a joke wad built entirely around this premise for Doom 2, only it was the super shotgun and not the regular one. I wish I could find it because it was pretty funny. :p

This is a very good job! I think it fits nicely, especially with so much attention to the hand detail. :)

I can't take credit for the hand edit, that was JustinC's work. I simply pasted it on top of Eriance's shotgun.

Having played through Strife with this, I can see why it doesn't have a shotgun early on: it absolutely dominates the arsenal. It does lose effectiveness once the Crusaders and Templars are introduced, but then you should have the Mauler by then. :p

Why not make it feel more shotgun-like then rather than behaving so much like the mauler's secondary fire? Doing that along with tweaking it so that an acolyte should normally take 2 shots to down, rather than the 1 that it currently usually takes would make it a more balanced weapon IMO.

The biggest issue is integrating it cleanly into Strife. I designed it this way because it both replaces a commonly available pickup and uses a preexisting ammo type. I also intended for this to be dropped right into Strife without modifying the gameplay too much. However, implementing accuracy has balanced it a bit more by making it less effective early on. I've noticed it now takes two shots to down acolytes in this version since some of the shots tend to scatter, so you have to be right on top of them in the early game. The lack of energy pods also means it won't see much action until about the middle portion of the game. For ammo conservation, the flamethrower is much better, and the Mauler blows it out of the water, but it fills an interesting niche that was missing in vanilla Strife.

I'm definitely going to make a traditional shotgun for my next Strife mod. The biggest issue is figuring out which ammo type to use, but I suppose it could take assault gun ammo and fire out five of them at a time. That would give the player 25 shots to play around with, 50 with an ammo satchel. It doesn't make much sense, but the way Strife implemented a lot of things makes it difficult to just drop a new weapon in cleanly. Alternatively, both weapon and ammo could be dropped by reavers, but they appear so late in the game that it would lose all effectiveness.

Strifeguy bludgeons them with the shotgun butt, of course :P

I'm using stamina as a generic "strength" trait, since stamina not only increases the player's health but also makes his punches stronger. :p
