Racing engine script?

Post by Tormentor667 »

Out of curiosity, has anyone ever tried or succeeded in realising a engine script for Doom that has a similar handling like Super Mario Kart on the SNES? Is something like this even possible?

Indeed there was.

10 years ago, Nanami et al worked on ZOOM. But it never got past the demo stage.

Zoom hasn't been a scripted racing engine in general. The player still walked/behaved as usual.

Hello,

There has been a mod on /vr/ that has its own engine.
But the people there hate it:
http://filesmelt.com/dl/doomkart-alpha-socracked.pk3

Sincerely, marioHR

Edit:
The guy who made it is hated, not the mod itself

Just gonna point out that the author of that mod is a shitposting moron and the mod itself is vaporware. I wouldn't be surprised if that file is some kind of trick pk3, or the "No Fun Allowed" version.

Jesus, that thing's still on Filesmelt?

The file linked there is garbage, and basically proof that a guy, who is now known as Doomkartguy or DKG, after a shitton of hyping up his mod, actually had nothing to show and was just an idiot. Disregard.

MarioHR, Xangi and Ijon's posts
SO...I guess this means we should tell everyone in here (and by consequence, the Doom community in general) about the second (and failed) attempt at a "kart racing" Doom mod...A warning beforehand, this story is long

SO IT GOES LIKE DIS

Back when /vr/ was made, a ton of people moved to that place, including (of course) everyone who likes Doom. To get things going, people were throwing ideas about "what would be cool to create in Doom". Some people said "a Contra mod", others went for "monsters that spit X type of monsters when killed, which spit Y monster when killed", etcetera.

One of the ideas that people were looking forward to was precisely a "Doom Kart" mod. A random dude raised his hand and offered to do the work, and got in contact with another dude to create the sprites. This individual (the mod mantainer, who, by the means and purposes of this story shall be named DKG from now on) was slowly making progress and posting info and pics about it

Everything was going fine, but then at some point there were appearing posts asking about Doomkart and when it would be released. People assumed that DKG was still developing it, so they often replied with "When it's done", "give the dude some time", etc. The deal here was, those posts related to the mod were slowly becoming a thing on every new thread, and they were slowly turning into what people would generally call "shitpost". This naturally generated doubt between the people at /vr/ about the real status of the mod.

One day, all out of the sudden, a dude posted about "how he used Google to randomly find links about an alpha Doomkart mod". When hooked up, the well known pic of a robot impaling a "no fun allowed" sign popped up on the screen along with a message bashing the community. Everyone went angry, and then other people figured out that the file itself (which apparently was "encoded and uncrackeable" was just a compressed file with next to nothing. Coincidentally, right after the event, posts still asking about the mod progress were appearing, so the plot was thickening even more. The "so cracked" content of the mod was zipped in a file and is what the previous dude just posted here.

Later on, people were discovering that:
  • The dude who was mantaining the mod...
The person(s) who were shitposting and asking about it AND...
The one who posted the fake alpha mod...
...were the same imbecile prick (DKG). He did absolutely nothing worth of being picked up again by anyone, and he was just playing with the vision and dreams of everyone in there. He has earned a KoS status between the threads, and everytime someone asks about "what happened to Doomkart" (which is always him), a mass reporting happens

He still shitposts every now and then, in a certain and well-known period of time. He tries absolutely everything to derail the current Doom thread (tries to stir the pot about a certain topic in general, or the currently talked one; bashes X mod, X community or X individual, asks about Doomkart, etc. He even went to create a malicious script in a stolen map which practically freezes your PC by using an infinite loop of sorts). The people at /vr/ isn't quite sure if he purposedly uses the same charade, pictures and behaviour, or he is actually that much of a dumb fuck to repeat himself, but people always find out that he's the one shitposting in the threads.

Has he been banned, you may ask? Yep. At this point he's ban evading, but since he's from a certain country which allows people to reset their modem he's able to come back. Looking forward to stop this problem and find the thereabouts of this asshole, people figured out that he has an account right here. But don't worry, it's not a well-known user (he will never make anything worthy in his lifetime, anyway), he's very well hidden.

So yeah...that's the story behind the second attempt at Doomkart, which has been unacknowledged by the community 'till now. If you have any questions feel free to do 'em. Sorry for the long off-topic post, but I felt like commenting on this subject since it popped out (thanks, Tormentor). But yeah, if anyone decides to create a "racing" mod of sorts, should realize that this ain't child's play, and he must put actual effort on it, since it may appear simple at first sight, but it's kind of tricky to make it work perfectly
