After a good amount of time of learning things I have this prototype 3d door, which pretty much says this sort of thing is possible. Very excited now.

Nice.
One minor thing not related directly to the door construct itself but the example map: using the open switch a second time moves the poly by another 90 degrees but not the door model so the blocking characteristics of the poly becomes desynchronised with the model (eg pressing open open close creates a door that looks closed but the polys are open).
