Unwad not being all that great. Messing up textures.

Post by Potnop »

OK, I figured out that the only tool that works for merging wads and their textures is DeepSea's merger tool. Everything else messed stuff up including unwad.

Now I have a nice wad of texture packs merged that I'd like to use.

Now I want to extract the entire wad with unwad so I can use a pk3 instead. Not sure what unwad does wrong though but it seems to mess up all the textures that consist of more than one patch. Sure I can use a wad instead of a pk3, but I like pk3s more. They seem cleaner and more capable. Plus there's compression... Wad tools always f things up, but there's like no risk with a pk3 as far as I know.

You could always do a bit of monotonous copy and pasting, it is boring but at least you wouldn't have to worry about merging....

No the thing is I already merged them properly.

And how would I go about copy pasting texture info? I really hate how all the textures are defined in 1 file. I wish each texture had it's own definition lump or something. Copy pasting is totally doable in that case but not when I was merging texture packs.

The problem now is that I'm trying to convert the wad to a pk3 with the only tool I know that can do that and it's messing things up. I googled and only found Unwad can do it. Slumped hasn't been updated since 2007 and it simply says this will be supported in the future.

OMG can someone please make a good wad editing tool that doesn't completely break our wads? I always have to have Wintex, XWE, and Slumped around because each one does something right while the rest of the functionality of each is a peice of crap. Now I also have DeepSEA which seems to have some nice tools that actually are reliable but there's nothing there to convert wad to pk3 since DeepSea is ancient heh...

Like Wintex is nice since it actually converts the resources to the Doom format which I usually tend to want but it can't create resources since it puts a blank lump there instead. XWE and Slumped are great for working with resource names and ordering them in organized ways and getting around the annoying limitations of Wintex like texture heights of 128 only. Map editors tend to be good but when I use a wad tool I feel like I'm using a substandard peice of software hacked together ASAP and falling apart and crashing all the time. I haven't once found a tool I'm completely satisfied with.

Hmm maybe I can try manually extracting files though....

Am I doing something wrong though? TEXTURE1.lmp and TEXTURE2.lmp and PATCHNAMES.lmp should be in the root directory of the pk3 right? That's how it is with KDIZD...

Just did some sifting through google to find some hard to fund stuff. This may be promising: http://home.pacbell.net/jflynn/software.html The patcher utility has some advanced stuff for building wads from scratch and one of which is also used for merging wads. The description in the txt file seems like it should do this properly. Now I'm no programmer so this will be extremely difficult to figure out. Oh wait. I am a programmer. I've got this... If I can get caching to work on a website I can figure out how to merge friggin texture pack wads together eventually. Has no one else ran into problems with this though?

Ahaa got it working. It seems to be a very good merging tool. At first I thought it f'ed up as well but turns out one of the wads had a bad texture definition so I just tossed it out. Oh well I guess I won't be using the silver textures pack. This one finally merged the wad fully properly. Deepsea had problems as well where it didn't put patches and flats between the markers properly. Only thing is this tool doesn't merge animdefs and stuff so I'll have to import that manually from too much brown. FINALLY I got a good texture pack going. And now I used unwad to convert it to a pk3 and it works finally. YESSS!!!!

BTW HOLY CRAP XWE has some major bugs. At one pt I wasn't even able to invoke task manager because it made that crash even...

If you send me the wad in question, I can try to see what unwad's doing wrong... keep in mind it was never meant to compose textures from patches, just to rip patches themselves (and keep the texture1 lump intact)...

Oh yeah I was merging multiple texture wads so I assumed it would properly merge the texture lumps but it didn't.

The MER utility from the patcher does this properly. http://home.pacbell.net/jflynn/software.html
