New wad

Post by Daniel »

Hello people,

Today, I finally finished the first map of an upcoming project. Here it is! Please download, play and tell me what you think. The news is that monsters will become smarter: some of them can avoid your shots, jump to chase you and steal weapons and inventory. For this sample wad, there is only a zombie that steals your pistol when he gets close to you. Also, I maintained the default monsters, so when you see a new one, it would feel like "OMFG!!" This wad is made for GZDoom, and uses the beautiful GL lights and 3D sectors. Hope you enjoy it!

I'm trying to do my best, but depending from the critics, I'll leave the project. I don't want another NeoDoom. Maybe it's one of the most unrecognized wad ever; three years of work for severe criticism.

I have to say that was a pretty slick mod. It was interesting with that fast thiefy zombie, but what i liked most was the level design. I could use someone as talented with the map designs as you for my quake 2 mod. That was pretty much one of the best maps i've played to date.

Nice little map. I had fun with it. I like all the crouching secrets. Some good stuff here.

Two problems I noticed:

1) For some reason, the first time that I played it, the game kept auto-changing me away from my pistol as if I didn't have any ammo for it - but I did have ammo - and I was unable to switch back to it until I found another clip. This made it quite tough because I would only get a few shots then be back to my fists. Strangely, this did not happen the second time that I played.

2) The latest GZdoom revision (r409) crashes as soon as you start the map. Crash reported over at the GZdoom forum:

Great little level. :D

Did you compose the music? (I know it's one of many original midis from NeoDoom.)

Cool, this was pretty nice, the thieving zombie was pretty silly, but at least it works I suppose :lol:

The rocket launcher rip is pretty ugly, and the Biorifle thing is kind of stupid as well - maybe you could consider changing these weapons?

By the way, I thought you told me NeoDoom 2 was a rumor? :P

Hang on... Thieving Zombie???!!!! Is that why I kept losing my pistol? Doh! :lol:

[edit]

Yes, that's exactly what is going on. No bug there then. :)

One other thing I noticed, the door that needs a red key doesn't have any obvious "red door" markings as far as I can see. IMO, doors that require keys should always have some indication on them that they require a key.

First, thank you very much for taking one small time of yours playing this wad. I appreciate your comments here, it will help a lot to improve the wad, I'll be careful with it.

@Enjay: yes, be careful with stolers hehehe! There will be one zombie that steals bottles and throws it against you... ehhh :evil:
I don't usually put key indicators on doors, I'll start putting it right now. Certainly it makes the player more well-orientated. Also, the GZDoom version here is r400.

@Toenail: rocket launcher isn't a really pretty sprite, but I don't have anything better than old rips (people would certainly complain if I do this)... I tried to use relatively new graphics. Maybe if someone could do one for it, I don't have the skills, but ripping this weapon would change gameplay drastically. Also, the biorifle is actually a BFG, a very very powerful weapon, it should be used only on latest levels, must think before to make a balanced gameplay.

@jimmy91
Yes, this music comes from some old wads done before, and it's a personal composition.

@Indecom
Maps definitively are my best to offer hehehe! I won't go further in adding sprites or weapons...

Okay, I appreciate your comments very much! Very serious and dedicated. It motivates us to keep working on it, I'll se what I can do. Thanks a lot!!!!

Hey, i'm curious if you might mind mapping with me for QuakenDoom when I'm finished doing all the decorate code for enemies, items, powerups and weapons? It wont be a while, but i'm really impressed with your mapping skills.

For one you could get a different shotgun graphic instead of the Duke3D one, like the Duke 64 one or the edited one I made which is at the Realm, hasn't been much used yet. Just saying...

Indecom,

Dude, sorry, but nowadays I don't have much time left to spend in more than one project... for now, this wad will take the short time I have to do something. Thanks for the inviting. Anyway, feel free to add any weapon/monster or whatever you want to put into your project :wink:

Xim,
You're the graphic editing master!!! I saw some of your recent works such as Xim-Marine, very very good!!! Also, we need a Zombie carrying the BFG, I'm trying to make one... :oops:
Btw, very thanks for the tip. I'll take a look at your shotgun, just searching for the mod you did it. Thanks!
