Outside fog, 3d floors and I.

Post by Lexus Alyus »

What is the best way to get rid of outside fog underneath a 3D floor? I would have thought that the 3D floor itself would have gotten rid if this... but it hasn't (why is this?)

This is important as the first episode is set on Titan (the Saturn moon that has a dense foggy atmosphere). I could get rid of the outside fog, but where would the fun be in that?

I have a sneaking suspicion that this might not be possible. If it is not then it should be! :D

I am not sure you even can. Since being on top of the 3D floor and underneath it means you're technically in the same sector, I'm not sure it's possible. Plus, I read somewhere on the DRD Team forums that it isn't, anyway.

I suspected as much... Can such a feature be implemented in GZDoom?

Yes, but can it be removed from the bottom of a sector whilst still being at the top? If I completely remove the fog it looks stupid outside the tunnel. Rght now it looks stupid in the tunnel...

I would have thought that the 3D floor special had a transfer light built into it because it transfers the light of the control sector (I thought this would remove the fog as well, but alas, it didn't...)

Hmm, I don't know, but this might be a bug...
Just tested it and what you're trying to do works just fine with "sector_setcolor", but not with "sector_setfade" :?

I have a sneaking suspicion that it's something to do with the way GZDoom renders fog that prevents this specific effect from being achieved right now.

Exactly. ZDoom is capable to achieve this, but GZDoom has a bug that involves fade transferring.

Ran into this problem a long time ago. If you're not lazy, you can do a search for my posts on the GZDoom forums... include keywords "underwater" and "fog".

If I recall correctly, Graf said it's not easy to split fog planes above and underwater... something to do with polygon splitting or something like that.

So it's not possible... Never mind, I'll just say that there was an explosion in the tunnel and the sector causes damage whilst the player is in it because most of the atmosphere in the tunnel has escaped out :D.
