Oh, Windows 10.
The Windows 10 command prompt functions exactly as it did since XP, at a minimum. Try again.

I have these files in my folder

Image

Firstly, I set zwadconv.exe to 'Run as Administrator'.
The contents in the convert.bat batch file is

Code: Select all

zwadconv.exe %1 zdNEW.wad
Dragging Wicked.wad on top of convert.bat works now.

Image
zdNEW.wad is written to the folder.

My original mistake was to overlook that I had appended .wad after %1 which resulted in an extension of .wad.wad
Anyways, the batch method works now.

I do not fare as well with the command line.
I open the command line window, drag zwadconv.exe to the prompt and type input and output pwadnames

While the conversion process seems to proceed, zdWicked.wad is never written to the folder and Search cannot find it anywhere on the drive.

That's because your working directory is Windows\System32. It's going to try and write the output there, assuming it can even find the input.

That might be because you're running it from system32. Try CD-ing to your ZD_Convert folder and then running zwadconv.exe from there instead; the command prompt is trying to run the program as if it were living in system32.

for the record, if you want to run that in the right context, use the command

cd \DOOMing\PWAD_EDITING\ZD_Convert (the \ at the beginning should put you in the root of the C drive)

That will set your working directory to the ZD_Convert directory where ZWADCONV lives. From there you should be able to do ZWADCONV to make it work.

An unexpected twist :)

Access is denied.
I had to take 'Run as Administrator' off zwadconv.exe.

Okay, both methods work now.

Isn't it sad that most people do not even know about such an essential feature...? :?

I didn't know about it and I've been using Windows since 3.1.

I wish I did know about it, because that would have saved me some steps in guiding people through certain things. You'd be amazed how frustrating it is to tell someone how to open a command prompt when they are crying and whining to you about a virus taking over their system, desperate for help, and they refuse to open TeamViewer.

An unrelated anecdote about that - there have been times when I even refused to help them after a certain point because they couldn't follow instructions and they just didn't trust me enough - and besides, two things - if you can't trust a tech with your system, why are you trusting their instructions? - and secondly, if your computer's already infected with a virus, there's already far worse things happening to it than some rogue tech that you're ironically PLEADING for advice from.

Somebody made a conversion wad for me. My wad does not work. When I load it with Gzdoom I get a black screen.

Seconded. And for what it's worth, I don't tend to assume Windows has genuine ease-of-use features that are actually helpful for someone who knows that they're doing. I'm using an alternative file manager anyway, since the "improvements" to Explorer drive me up thew walls. Removing progman was a mistake.

Other than the removal of the start menu, Explorer has been just fine for me. For everything else I just use Windows NT's command prompt, anyway, and in some cases, a Windows port of bash and associated Unix utilities.

Graf is right though - it is sad that most people don't know about it. Even sadder still, that it's not a feature that's emphasized enough for people to even know that it exists. That is a definite power-user feature that more power users should know about.

It's a feature I've often used to just type cmd<enter>, as an alternative to shift-rightclicking and select "open command window here".
