[Discontinued] Hellfire Division v1.1

Post by Accensus »

This mod is based on PillowBlaster's famous Russian Overkill! The core files are from Russian Overkill 2.1/2.2 with some exceptions, which were taken from 2.4.

What is Hellfire Division?

Hellfire Division is a derivation of Russian Overkill, which I've been working on for a long time.
It was intially intended to be a rebalance of RO, as I aimed to make the mod more serious. In the end, the mod development went its own way. Call it a "RO Patch" of some sorts. HD has most of RO's core features with a lot of new things designed entirely by me. It features an entirely new custom HUD, specifically made for Hellfire Division.

A few notes regarding the mod:
- You need GZDoom to run this mod! - Sure, you can run it in ZDoom, but the software renderer will most likely render your eyes useless after ten minutes of exposure. It's not intended to be run in ZDoom.

- Before you go on and rip from this mod - ask. Just. Ask. Be it in here or in a PM - it doesn't matter. Don't forget to tell me which part you want to rip and why. Most of the stuff still belongs to PillowBlaster and I do not know if he is okay with it. I have permission to make this post, so don't worry about me.

- Regarding the HUD: Feel free to rip from the code, but don't, for Christ's sake, rip from the graphics. The whole point of having a custom HUD is that...well..it's custom. It's unique. It's one of a kind. It's a special snowflake. Suddenly finding it everywhere takes the point out of custom, doesn't it?
There is one exception to this rule - you can rip all you want as long as you don't release it to the public.

- Hellfire Division has a few high-definition sprites. They may not fit like a glove, but I am doing my best in trying to fix that.

- Some of the weapons from RO have had their offsets fixed to allow 16:9 support. Unfortunately, this means that users with 4:3 monitors are gonna have a bad time with some weapons, but it's certainly better than having your weapon cut off in the middle of the screen.

- Don't be surprised when you find out that a player class is missing or that many of the OP weapons are now gone - I've done my best to transfer several weapons' abilities to others before removing them. The whole point of this clean-up was to leave only weapons which the player will always make good use of.

- This mod is still WIP and perhaps always will be. That doesn't mean that I've halted progress, no. In fact, it means that when, and if, I have spare time, I might add more and more things to the mod.

- Requests are welcome, but don't overdo it. If they are reasonable, you might see them added in the next release.

- All this is intended to be a middle ground between RO and serious gameplay. If you want an awesome mod with lots of shooting, but a different theme, try Guncaster. I recommend it and rate it 11/10. It's That freaking good.

Terminate; //End

Screenshot: http://imgur.com/AqVcxIa Probably doesn't reveal much. That's because most of the changes are in the code, not the graphics. But you can see what the HUD looks like.

Download: v1.1

Patch notes are in the zip.
Spoiler: Older versions
New versions will be released within my discretion.

WARNING: AS OF 04.07.2016, I AM PUTTING THE MOD ON INDEFINITE HOLD! NO NEW VERSIONS WILL BE RELEASED ANYTIME SOON. REASON FOR THAT IS THAT I NO LONGER HAVE THE TIME AND NERVE TO REBALANCE AND ADD STUFF TO IT. I HAVE ALSO LOST INTEREST IN THIS MOD.

HUD IS NOW FREE FOR USE IN OTHER PROJECTS YOU FEEL THAT COULD MAKE USE OF IT. FEEL FREE TO RIP AND TEAR AS LONG AS YOU GIVE ME SOME CREDIT FOR MY WORK.

Even though there aren't any screenshots, this sounds promising. I'll be checking this out right now.

Edit: Well, you are certainly right about it feeling like a patch for Russian Overkill. I dig some of the High-resolution weapons, and I also dig the HUD.
Things that I can't dig about this however:

-The sword. I doesn't feel like RO material. You probably already know considering that you mentioned most weapons are rough.
-The superweapon's Altfire takes all of the ammunition it uses.

Thanks for the feedback.

I haven't put up any screenshots since it's the same as Russian Overkill. There aren't any noticeable changes apart from the HUD. Giving screenshot will provide no useful info whatsoever. The difference is in the DECORATE code, mostly. Well, a few weapon sprites too, but generally it's the same.

As for the things you mentioned:
- The sword was something like "HD Exclusive". Although I Have received several complaints about it and I will see what I can do about it. I don't promise anything, but I'll definitely look into it.

- The superweapons. Yeah...well...the reason behind the alt-fire consuming all ammo is because of their overpowered alt-fires. The old mechanic in the previous versions allowed them to fire once without backpack extension, and twice with. Guess I'll bring that back, but I'll have to nerf the damage (yet again). Superweapons kill half the map in a single volley, which doesn't fit this particular mod.

I've added a poll regarding the sword. It's a tough decision for me, so I will leave it to the community to decide. Poll will end in 24 hours. I'll probably release an update tomorrow.

If anything, the OP weapons should just stay the same as it is right now if you want to keep em that way.
If anything, just reduce the cost of the altfire but down to when the player can't shoot another alt unless they pick up more ammo.

Also, one of the starting weapons is positioned really weird because it looks like it should be centered.

I've already done the 2nd one. Nerfed 2 supers too. I'll fix the centered weapon in the next release.

My main complaint with this mod is that every single weapon in a single class (primarily rockets, you know what I'm talking about) seems to use approximately the same amount of ammo per shot (with missiles, like 5 of them), which makes having 150 total of that ammo redundant. If you're not going to end up subdividing it, why not reduce the total ammo capacity to 30 and each weapon fire uses 1 ammo? Probably more justifiable with the whole numbers effect (BIGGER NUMBERS EQUALS BETTER, RITE?) but it still bothers me... Plus I feel more comfortable just firing the Juggernaut and receiving the same effect of killing everything that I would with missile weapons combined with the added bonus that it doesn't eat all my god damn ammo. And on this ammo consumption issue I like how my SOVIET script is still included so "set RO_SuperBackpack 1" and "set RO_FullBackpack 1" are essentially hidden cheat codes ;)

This mod is okay for a hack of RO, but I feel like some of Pillow's awesome effects are dampened by the fact that you haven't yet included any of your own. (The Panther rifle is a complete homage to the Wolgir in name and quality, isn't it? Isn't it?) Also the Boneduster should at least only reload if the reload key is used instead of only reloading on altfire or empty. EDIT: And sometimes the Boneduster can be made to fire a single shell after altfiring.

I'll add that to my to-do list. Suddenly there's so many things to work on and fix, lol. Yeah I'll correct the ammo consumption for the next release. Zhs2, I did remove the SOVIET script in the unreleased version, but, if it's an issue, I will gladly bring it back. I removed it cause after testing several times with different settings...I saw no difference. Besides, if you wanna cheat here, why not just DL real RO? ;)

About Boneduster - I'll change that. I'm also planning a charged shot like in Bulletstorm, but that will have to wait for a while since my HDD died last week and I'm still waiting for a replacement. Don't have Bulletstorm installed atm, so I can't rip and tear some sprites.

I haven't included effects because I am quite bad at making fancy stuff. I get ideas by playing and lately I've rarely had time to play. Been balancing and fixing all day long today. I want to release the big patch either tomorrow or on Sunday.

Yet another note - Some weapons have only been renamed and slightly rebalanced. Yes, Panther is a copy of Wolgir with Libra's shield made toggleable (Reload). I was tempted to say that this isn't RO. It's based on RO, but it's not RO. You're gonna find different things in here - some of them may be really close to RO's features, but they are different, even if it's just one bit.

Also, I appreciate the feedback. Will give what you said a thought.

The SOVIET script grants you its effects only if those certain CVARs I mentioned above are set - "RO_SuperBackpack" triggers the ammo capacity multiplier on every backpack pickup after your first, and "RO_FullBackpack" causes every backpack picked up to completely fill your ammo supplies. They're basically OP options in an OP mod to make you more OP if you don't feel OP enough, so yeah, cheat codes. :P If you do remove the script, I would recommend changing the backpack item to inherit from Backpack instead of CustomInventory.

Alrighty, folks! Version 1.1 is out! This is the first time I'm trying out this ammo mechanic so don't hesitate to drop a comment or two if you find a bug or imbalance. I'll fix it in the next version.

Lud, I have tested the 1.1, the mod has improved! I love the HUD btw.

Well I really like the idea of making a Russian Overkill alternative, so I want to show you two screenshots of things I don't like, although I'm a noob to the forum so I don't know if I'm uploading them correctly:

The floating hand :D

Isn't this weapon too moved to the right? I think it would look cooler if it was more centered (like in RO).

So that's it, keep up the good work :)

Thanks for the feedback mate.

The floating hand is actually a wrist minigun. It was meant to replace the sword I removed, and provide a "backup" weapon . I'm not really eager to change that - I'm out of ideas for "original" weapons and people wanted something else instead of the sword.

The Yamato...hmm, I see you're playing on a 4:3 monitor, so there's the issue.
Lud wrote:- Some of the weapons from RO have had their offsets fixed to allow 16:9 support. Unfortunately, this means that users with 4:3 monitors are gonna have a bad time with some weapons, but it's certainly better than having your weapon cut off in the middle of the screen.
To make both 4:3 and 16:9 users happy, I'll have to do things that are beyond my power like heavy sprite editing. :(

EDIT: I have some ideas for v1.2, though all I can say at this point is that the version is very far from release. I need to add enough things to be worthy of release. Since I'm flying solo, things are going pretty slowly. I'll keep the forum posted when I release anything. Life's kept me busy with other stuff and I haven't really touched anything other than Wolgir/Panther's sprites. Yeah, I found something better, and I'm pretty sure I'll keep finding more stuff to improve.

Re: [Discontinued] Hellfire Division v1.1

Post by Accensus »

I am hereby discontinuing this mod (I did a few days ago, but I'm announcing it officially today) due to the fact that it's goal has been superseeded by my other mod, CustomDoom. I will not update this anymore, so any bugs/upcoming features/etc will become frozen indefinitely.

I'd like to ask an admin to lock this thread.

As for the custom HUD, it is now free to use anywhere, for any reason. I am giving full permission to rip from graphics, code, whatever. It belongs to the community now. Just, please, remember to give some credit for my work.

Are you sure about this? I don't like to just lock threads if I don't absolutely need to.

Yeah, I really don't plan on updating it. Life's also got me on the run so I doubt I'll ever have the time for any major updates. I'm focusing on CustomDoom atm, which like I said superseeds this mod.
