Hell on Xmas Eve - Play as Santa and save Xmas!

Post by Astroman9991 »

Originally released on Xmas day, I was particularly late with placing it here. Sorry. Ready for next Xmas, right?

STORY:
The Feminist Elven Militia (F.E.M) have called the demons from Hell to aid their plot in defeating Santa Claus! Worst of all, they've constructed a robot called the Cyberkeef to kick his jolly arse! After being imprisoned in a cold cell, Santa managed to destroy a chunk of the wall from the outside by destroying a barrel with a pistol he kept in his boot - he notices that they're even sealing the exits off, so the only way out is through. Our hero sets off to save Xmas, guns-blazing, through six exciting levels, from a shopping plaza to a toy smuggling operation, armed with the deadliest of weapons!

Originally, it was to be released and updated majorly for next Xmas - but nah, sod that.

Pretty sure it's a reference to the (utterly terrible and poorly made) Duke Nukem expansion pack Nuclear Winter. But yeah, that's rather poor taste.

Apparently too lazy to consider what was worth putting in this thing too, considering the download size.

☑ annoying, trollish right-wing agenda
☑ "i was too lazy" in the intro post
☑ way too big download for a simple mod

Now let's see how it actually is...

- lots of flat surfaces and arbitrary texture changes
- lots of rips but no sources
- extra weapons that add little if anything to gameplay
- room after room to clear out with little in the way of dynamic situational changes
+ no obvious glitches
+ released too late to ruin actual Xmas cheer

Verdict: 0/0 would divide by zero again to avoid replay

I personally quite enjoyed Nuclear Winter, but that's not really relevant.

So, having played this for a little while, I'm seeing map elements lifted directly from levels in Heretic and HacX, a lot of redundant weapons, lots of technical problems (ranging from using shamefully deprecated functions like KEYCONF setslot for weapons, to reusing existing actor class names), the player sprites aren't scaled so Santa is apparently a fucking giant (not to mention the major hiccup in his walk cycle and the palette rape on his suit), resources pulled from other projects, including ones that aren't even finished (the Soulsphere is a fine example), all in one bafflingly large download.

So, pretty much exactly what's to be expected from this author, having seen his previous works.

I don't know what to say about this wad that already hasn't been said.

I actually rather enjoyed this wad. It started off really awful. The first level was poorly balanced, confusing, and ugly, but the second one was far better. The maps were fairly mazelike with a lot of closed doors. On the other hand, they mostly made sense which is a big plus in my book. Balance was pretty good for the most part, though I have no idea what difficulty level I was playing on. I do think it could have benefited from more scripting and use of ZDoom features, but most will disagree with me.

Lack of credit is a serious issue. I have no idea where any of the resources came from. The only knockoff map piece I noticed was the dock from Heretic, but some other parts did seem familiar. I also looked inside the WAD file (I almost always do this) and it was a disorganized mess with a lot of deprecated features in use.

Finally, timing is everything and you missed it by a week and a half.

Yes, it's a reference to DNW; of course, I have no vendetta or prejudice against feminists or feminism on the whole, just to make things clear.

Oh, tell me about it. I originally released it on YouTube and a few other minor places on time. I suppose it'll be here for another Xmas...

With a 23.5 MB download (which is pretty damned big for a Doom mod), it's nice to have some tangible information/evidence about the WAD before downloading.

[edit] BTW, for anyone interested, much of the size is the music: about 21MB of it (one MP3 is 14.4 MB). I'm not even sure how much of it is used. There's also a huge, non-functional titlepic that weighs in at 2.7MB. The mod could have been just as good with alternatives for those and much, much smaller.[/edit]

I sometimes do a 'light' download, using the original MID tracks; I really don't see the point now, I'm taking a break from map-making.

I wasn't aware of it before this thread, but I was aware of it by the time I last posted just by seeing the mention. I stand by my previous words.

Getting inspiration from DN3D isn't an instant deal-breaker in my books, but lifting the creepy neckbeard shit wholesale is.
