Re: After the Holocaust: Post-Apocalyptic City MAP 13 Remake

This was a pretty impressive map. I loved the way you enter the fast food restaurant, that was a neat technique.

I'm more than curious to how map 16 would be done in this design!

Updated to final version. More monsters, ammo, and a new secret area added.

yeah the original city outdoor maps from doom2 are pretty bland - this "update" of these maps is awesome!
(the cars tough - ugh...)

Thanks for the feedback.

Also, I'm still looking for good car textures. Can anyone point me any?

No idea about the car textures, sorry. I do have some musical suggestions, though. I see -- or hear, rather -- that you made use of music within the Dark Ambient genre. Though it fits the atmosphere quite well, it lacks just that tiny kick that turns it from an errie background tune to actually induce some fear and dread. Have a listen to these tracks by the artist Dreams of Dying Stars
Drowning in the Sun
Stardance
Funeral in the Void

Those are the main ones that seem to really fit well. Those, and all the other work of the artist is available legally here: http://archive.org/search.php?query=cre ... g+Stars%22 :-)

Holy shit.

Just played this with Hideous Destructor... managed to make it as far as the demon ambush in the parking lot, then panicked and tried to shoot them really really fast instead of fleeing or grenading them before they closed range.

...haven't made it that far in the next five replays. >_>

I love how it feels like the monsters are just sort of wandering around and they suddenly run into you instead of just sitting around until they're wakened by your presence.

EDIT: @N6: I just tried playing this map to two of those, it was more vaguely annoying than terrifying. Definitely like the original choice better.

EDIT2: Re Ravick's comment back on page 1: it was definitely a better idea to keep it sparse as it is:
1. By the time you get there they'll have had time to eat or zombify them all.
2. If not, canon D2 has all these areas where you've got these big bins full of gory human remains (e.g. the BFG secret in Suburbs) which fully explains where the dead are put.
3. It's more terrifying if left to the imagination sometimes. Also hints of I Am Legend in this (esp. with the wandering and scavenging for supplies, which is very well done)...

As Vaecrius suggested, I played this with HD on. Whoooooooaaaaaaaaaaaaaaargh! I could cross post this, but I have already mentioned that HD is awesome. This map is great, but in zdoom I feel lag. It is slightly unpleasant in zdoom, barely noticeable in gzdoom with hardware rendering.

I just ran into the garage, did away with the enemies inside and... now what? Sounds like I'm going to have a Butch Cassidy and the Sundance kid moment -although there is only doomguy,

However, it seems wrong that the windows don't either break or block; shooting through them as if they did not exist... Well; maybe the invaders are devious illusionists, confusing me with fake glass. (I'm talking about the first room I ran into, on the left. Imps tossed fireballs out, and when I was inside a zombieman fired upon me from outside without damaging the intermediate window.)

Simply awesome!! Great job, i'm surprised.
AND THIS MAP MUST BE PLAYED WITH BRUTAL DOOM!!
I love the arquitecture and the ambientation, is very realistic.
The interiors of the buildings are brilliant. I love the office plant.

Aside the very hard dificulty, the map is too small when you play it twice, but a very fun challenge.
Try it in UV with the Brutal Doom mod, and tell me how many times you die after start the map!

I think you are playing in an extremely outdated version of Zdoom.

10/10, nice work, you should remake all doom maps (If you have enough time to)
