[WIP] Engines of Violence

Postby CorSair » Mon Jun 25, 2012 3:22 pm

With no jobs on sight, and having urge to try new things, I decided to tackle on mapping. I tried to start it few months back, but the interest died some days later. Now with the inspiration somehow returned, I try to do least some sort demo of my doings. But what I am fully intending to do is to make 21-level WAD, with three episodes. With episodes, I try to show my skill progression, how I've progressed with every aspect of map making.

First episode would resemble close to "classic" mapping, with only some special functions of ZDoom, like slopes for example, and standard textures from the Doom 1 & 2, also including Final Doom 1 & 2.
Second episode would be far more advanced. 3D floors would be one aspect to add, and I am still going to use standard textures in episode 1, but I am going to attempt to make few of my own.
Third episode would got everything possible what could be done in mapping business. All textures and sprites are custom (no ripping, gonna do them all myself), custom music (if I have talent to do that!), and everything possible I can use in ZDoom engine. I would rate this as Level: Asian. :P Very arduous and looong task. I know, but then I think I have learned mostly all things I need to do for mapping.
But one thing (or two) I ain't touching: Adding/creating custom monsters, or weapons. That is for sure. As for updating my progress, I try to do least one (big) update per month, or weekly in the best, if the mood hits.
If you folks notice some flaws in map design, got some suggestions to improve atmosphere and design, or if you only got some general advice how to do maps, please, do so. Any bit of constructive criticism is welcome.

But I think I've too much of text. Audience waits screenies...

Tackling some issues with Doom Builder, (making DB2 crash twice and NOT SAVING twice, you can imagine my reaction when I have to start over), I managed to finish Map 1. Playable, only needs few minor fine-tunes, if it needs those at all. Bit bland in my opinion, but if it is fine for everyone else, guess I am partially settled with it.

As a stupid question: Does Doom Builder got autosave option? I don't want similar grievances happen again.
