[release] The Phobos Directive, direct to you

Post by Enjay »

The Persecution Complex is pleased to announce

Image

The Phobos Directive is a nine map hub for DooM Episode One that plays under GZDoom. It features new enemies, new items, weapon upgrades, new music, mission driven gameplay and more.

Several maps in the hub can be played through in any order, adding to the replayability of the game. Additionally, in many areas, the type of ammo, weapon upgrades, and enemies you encounter will change with the weapons you have.

I haven't played through all of it just yet, however, my first impression is "This is good". :)

Okay, feedback time:
  • The sound of the music is loud. I can probably lower the music sound from the menu except it makes no difference when I do so.
  • Music doesn't loop.
  • The ambient bird and cricket sounds you hear weren't expected. Isn't Phobos supposed to be devoid of wild life? Or am I wrong?
  • Door sounds aren't that good to be honest.
  • Portable stimpack doesn't play 'use' sound upon using it.
  • The difficulty of some of the beefed-up/new monsters is a little punishing, IMO.
  • Armor is little scarce.
  • Great use of 3D architecture.
If I find anything else I'll let you know.

Music plays even when -nomusic is enabled. I don't always want to have music playing from my game.

[edit] I'm somewhat disappointed that, even though you've evidently gone through the effort of adding enhanced upgraded altfires to the original Doom weapons, you haven't put any effort into making the weapons look or sound nicer. I can't load alternative weapon sets (or even Per Kristian's smooth weapons addon) with this, either. The chances of me actually giving this a full playthrough are, sadly, somewhat low as a result of these things.

@Blue Shadow: The music isnt supossed to loop. The whole music thing is a debatable point, but after all, there was an idea in mind when it comes to music in the mod, and that's what was done.

@wildweasel: It is not that no effort was made to enhance the weapons. It was actually a decision deliberately made. The weapons werent supossed to look, nor feel "nicer". Primary fire is exactly the same thing (compared with vanilla) in all the weapons (as in no change was made at all). Only a single sound was added for the weapons and monsters, and that was for the chaingun alt fire, but other than that, all weapons use stock doom resources; and while a lot can be done fx-wise with stock doom resources, if used properly (see Disposable Heroes), the general idea behind the this mod was more related to a simpler look in the weapons (or should I say "vanilla-ish look"?). And is not meant to be compatible with other "enhancer" mods, not on purpose, but you cant expect to have a (g)zdoom mod to be all that compatible with other mods.

In all honesty, it was this mod what made me remember why I loved the original, unmodified (in the look/behavior/feeling) doom weapons.

The beefed up zombieman & Shotgunner were kinda pointless and annoying.

Fair enough, but the silence after the music ends is a little... shall we say... unbearable considering Doom's lack of ambient sounds. I know a few ambient sounds have been added to this but still.
In all honesty, it was this mod what made me remember why I loved the original, unmodified (in the look/behavior/feeling) doom weapons.
In that case, change the weapons back to their originals and everybody is happy. :)

Looks really nice. Will download later. I have a question. When I go to what's new, I can only go to 'screenshots' for projects. How can I go to the download page...? I've seen a couple more interesting completed projects, but I can't seem to find any download button. If I go in "news" for your project, I can't find any download button either. Please help me a bit.

All released projects are in "What's Old", which is also where the download links are.

Primary fire hasn't changed at all, and you can always avoid using the weapon upgrades.
