First Map

Post by Grymmette »

Well my little brother decided to start mapping and completed a short first map earlier today.

Since he won't listen to my criticisms I figure this is the best way for him to get some opinions. Pretty self explanatory, give some constructive criticism on the map. (Don't bother giving him Torm's Detail Guide, I can link that myself if I felt like it, but I think it's better if he didn't read it, no offense to Tormentor)

Yes, I know the screenshots are dark, but turning up the gamma really didn't help at all, I guess that's what happens when you make a dark map.

What's this. Some sanity in this world? I love it!

Anyways, I'll give this one a spin sometime soon. Doesn't look like anything overly amazing, but it's a first level.

Well, I played this, and at least the gameplay didn't make me want to kill myself, which is a good thing! Though I just played Mock 2, so maybe it's relative...

i also encourage him to practice rather than following a detail guide. Guide's stifle creativity, and sometimes the advice given can do more harm than good (see 2009 Mockaward winner). Another way to get a good sense of detail is to play lots of wads (including Tormenter's).

Only if you follow guides like rules. Guides are meant simply to point you in the right general direction.

When I started mapping, Tormentor's guide helped me create better-looking maps, cause I used it more like a list of tips than like the 10 commandments of mapping or something
