[WIP] Your Cows are in HELL (farmville parody)

Post by MartinHowe »

Satan subverts an addictive social networking game and the SOE are ordered to destroy it. But until then...

Image

Social networking sites always seemed 90% pointless twaddle; after joining some of them at last, perhaps that should be 99% :P My Facebook account is spammed all the time by something called Farmville and even blocking the application doesn't stop regular wall posts about it getting through; it really is annoying :x

There are anti-Farmville groups on Facebook; however, some people have taking it as far as nuking a pastice of Farmville in a modern game called World in Conflict (warning: the video captions contain four letter words, though IMO "F***v***e" is a dirty enough word as it is :P).

So I thought: Can it be done in Doom? Hell, why not! FarmVile: Your Cows are in HELL (requires GZDoom)

This was meant only as a bit of fun and I didn't really think it was worth a "projects" thread as well as the "editing" thread at Opaque Sloped 3D Floors in GZDoom; however, screenies in the what the hell are you working on thread have been well received, so here we go

Screenshots:
Spoiler:
At the moment, work is focused on layout and buildings, but eventually I'll need to decide whether to:
  • Continue with the original idea of going for realism and populate FarmVile with real animals such as pigs, cows and sheep.
  • Completely demonise (pun intended) the storyline and create a farm full of, well, demons; e.g., by planting rows of hell roses, having a chained Alien queen laying facehugger eggs in the "chicken" coop, harvesting a crop of core tentacles, herding demons grazing in fields of blood and gore, etc.
Oh well, that decision can be left for later. Can anybody can spot the road layout patterns in the aerial screenshots and what they resemble? One is quite obvious, but the other is less clear-cut, though thematically related. After all, FarmVile is truly the work of a twisted mind :P

You're certainly going out your way to stress your hate towards Farmville :P How will it play exactly?

Believe me, there are people whose hatred for Farmville makes mine look pathetically weak :)
Cutmanmike wrote:How will it play exactly?
Essentially, a single player campaign along the lines of "omg l3ts uttelry wipe 0ut 4nd destr0y teh ev1l 0f Farmv1lle so w3 c4n have fun 5h00t1n stuff then dr0p a nucular bom 0n 1t 111!" FCOL, you didn't seriously expect a proper storyline in a Doom mod, did you :P Beyond that, I'm still thinking about it; originally the idea was to simply recreate the "nuking" scene in the video; then I realised there is scope for exploring the map while huntin', shootin' and (if I put *something bad* in the slurry tank) fishin' - the latter conducted with a hand grenade of course :)

Perhaps one has to find the radio shack and call down a nuclear attack before escaping with the incoming missile in the video copied in Doom; or maybe one has to poke gentle fun at DN3D by finding and activating a self-destruct button, though for reality's sake it would have to be a UX(nuclear)B from a previous war since your average farm generally doesn't include a scuttle charge.

Er... that's it

Why not have two scenarios for it?

One could be where you could go around slaughtering the animals or whatever and then nuking the place to clean it up, or two, you can just simply find the radio that lets you send a nuke down onto the farm.

Weapon Ideas:

Chicken:
Mistakenly injected with bovine growth hormones and demonically possessed, this chicken can now create and eject eggs at a high rate of fire. Secondary Fire launches explosive Grenade Eggs.

Cowtapult

STSBGNPDS (Surface-to-Surface Bovine-Guided Nuclear Payload Delivery System):
Cow with a mini-nuke strapped to its back. A remote linked to an electric prod strapped to its hindquarters gives you (some) control over its direction.

Crazy Old Lady:
Need backup? Just give old Ms. Flossie a ring to tell her that her Social Security check isn't coming this month, and you'll have a potent ally on your side. Armed with a seemingly unlimited supply of hungry, horrid-smelling, nearly feral cats, which she will wantonly huck at anything in her field of perception, this old woman will give new meaning to "The Golden Years".

Or you could add in those crazed Canadians who hide arsenals of weaponry out of fear that aliens are taking over their crops. They tote rocket launchers. Nothing like a rampagin' redneck farmer with an RPG to help you out.

MAN this sounds exciting!

Well there have certainly been some "interesting" suggestions... bit far out, man... :trippy: In the meantime here's more screenies 8-)

Making 3D structures is tedious in the extreme :(

I couldn't make the silos 3D unless settle for flat roofs; too many sectors needed for the dome shape and no
practical way of getting the slopes right (I did try, though, maybe there's a better way... :?)

Those silos look pretty rounded to me. Did you use 3D models instead?

Keep it up. I'm looking forward to this. It'll make a great novelty wad! :D

As Martin said, he could have 3D silos with flat roofs or (implied) settle for non-3D ones but with rounded roofs.

The silo roofs do indeed look pretty rounded because each uses 200 sectors plus intensive use of slope linedefs!

However they do not use 3D floors; that is, you can't "walk around inside the silos and kill whatever is lurking there" or whatever. Flat roofs don't look realistic and hollow rounded ones are a nightmare to do simply because there seems to be no general way to combine slopes and 3D floors and the barn/house design only works for certain circumstances; if only there were a terrain generator for GZDoom 3D sector layouts :(

The best compromise would be a set of non-sloped concentric rings a map unit or two apart, using the texture grain to hide the not-truly-sloped-ness; it would after all be nice to store stuff in the silos. For example, open the door at the base and harvested baby cacodemons (shaped/sized like tomatoes) come tribbling out to attack you.

Dammit I can't have a greenhouse with a peaked roof as 3D slopes must be opaque :(

This is a pretty nice idea! As a player of Farmville, I like the idea.. maybe I could give you some idea about the most representative things in the game...

Anyway, keep it up! And many wishes for the work! :D

A possibility would be to use portals. Though they're a bit fidgety.
