Vanilla Coop for Ult. Doom/Doom 2/Heretic (Updated 8/22/10)

Post by Skutarth »

Update
  • Download links are now just pwads. No patching involved. Just plug and play.
  • Heretic now included. It needed this more than Doom and Doom 2. Almost everything in the game flagged as Multiplayer was either a weapon or item that was meant for deathmatch. Most levels had something in the realm of 40 extra items.
  • Hexen had separate Cooperative/DeathMatch flags instead of a generic Multiplayer flag. Hexen doesn't exhibit the behavior this is meant to "fix".
Information
Here's something I quickly made for cooperative matches in ZDoom, though it should be compatible with any source port (including the original game).

These pwads remove all multiplayer flagged things and deathmatch starts from the stock maps in Ultimate Doom, Doom 2, and Heretic. This should make the game replicate single player behavior for cooperative multiplayer. In ZDoom, there is only a flag to remove multiplayer weapon spawns from cooperative. It has been made clear that an option to remove all coop tagged things will never make it into the trunk, so this is the next best alternative where it doesn't need to be updated every time the trunk is updated.

These are made using the latest known versions of Ultimate Doom, Doom 2, and Heretic. Some oddities may appear if you use them with an older version. See here for filesizes and checksums:

So basically it makes multiplayer games to have the same things as in single player? This means Coop will be drastically easier, as if it isn't easy enough.

The installation seems to be too much trouble for this minor (and lame) edition. I want extra monsters, not the opposite.

It also removes multiplayer weapons, such as plasma and BFG in MAP01...

Skulltag has a DMFLAG that only spawns Single-Player actors. It is called sv_coop_spactorspawn. This does the same thing similar to what you are trying to do, except this flag works for all WADs.

It only adds between 1 cyberdemon to 2 mancubus and a spider mastermind per level, and that's only in the later maps of Doom 2. It was already "drastically easier" despite the extra enemies since you had access to plentiful amount of extra life and ammo and all of the weapons way earlier on. See what Gez said. It's dumb to be able to get the rocket launcher in E1M1 or the BFG9000 and Plasma Rifle in MAP01 (with plenty of extra ammo). Just pump up the difficulty. The extra monsters associated with higher difficulties will still appear. Also, if you're really that much of a whiner, this is made as a pwad so you can use other mods with it. Try cutmanmike's 10x mod. See his site for more info.

Also, I would have just uploaded the wads, but it would be illegal for me to distribute the maps. I don't want Randy or Graf getting in trouble for linking to copyrighted materials.

That's good to know. It is nice to have the wads I've linked to in the case you want to use another engine, though. I still have no idea why that DMFLAG hasn't propagated back to ZDoom.

I see where you're going with this, and it's good intention. However, unfortunately something like this doesnt really help :(
Try again next time :P

No more stupid installation. I guess enough derivative work is released on these forums that I shouldn't be worried.

Heretic is now available. A huge percent of the multiplayer flagged things were game-breaking even more than they were in Ultimate Doom or Doom 2. You could get practically every weapon with full ammo only on the first map.

Download here:
http://www.filefront.com/16143009/HERETICCoop.rar

Again, this archive contains only a pwad meant to run on top of Heretic. No patching required.
See original post for more information.

yep, try playing coop in map01, and you will see that you can get the bfg and plasma rifle in the first map allready, making the coop super easy.

So it removes DEATHMATCH spawns in coop.

Correct. The items that were meant for deathmatch in these games were generically flagged as "multiplayer". Thus, extra weapons, powerups, and ammo meant for deathmatch also appear in cooperative. This removes those extra items, restoring the levels back to only having what they contain in single player.

I'd love to try this out, but the links aren't working. I looked for a solution for proper heretic co-op (i.e. without the extra stuff in levels) years ago but couldn't find one. This seems to be it. And it's source-port-agnostic!

PS. the other posters seem slightly confused :?:
