SpriTool: Doom format image auto renamer

Post by Indecom »

SpriTool:

Image

SpriTool is an automatic image renaming program designed to work with the Doom sprite naming standard.

What does SpriTool do exactly?
SpriTool loads images saved in various folders and renames them based on 2 states you define, actions being performed, and what frames encompass what action, and then add's the direction to the name based on how many directions you tell the program to utilize.

I created SpriTool to help with QuakenDoom 2, because after renaming over 1,000 images after 6 long hours, with many errors i realized that if i programmed a tool to do it for me, it would give me perfect results in a matter of a couple minutes of configuring and a couple seconds of compiling.

You can create sprite collections with thousands of images, 1,8, or 16 directional items, mirrored or non mirrored sprites. You can set the frames for various actions the sprite can perform, up to 26 actions with max 676 frames each.

If you guys have any questions or suggestions for future versions feel free to let me know your thoughts.

The download contains the exe and an rtf tutorial on how the program works, and how you can use it. :)

Indeed.

I work with monsters quite a lot, so this will be pretty helpful. :)

Does this work for weapons?

It works for any sprite that either consists of 1, 8, or 16 directions. Weapons fall under the 1 directions category so the answer is yes, it does. :)

(so long as you keep them in the proper naming and folder format prior to compiling.)

I'm not sure I understand why this tool is necessary (or to be fair, what it is really trying to do). When I make sprites, I just save them under suitable names from the get go. I don't recall ever being in a situation where I gave a bunch of sprites random names and then needed to rename them to proper names. Surely if the files in your directory have names that this tool can distinguish between, then you have already given them sequential names. Why not just give them the correct sequential names from the start? Or is that not what it is about?

This is mostly useful for people who render their frames out of an animation program, like i have for QuakenDoom. Blender exports several hundred images in sequential order using the name0001 format, and this tool will break up these sequential images into different actions and rename them into a format that doom can recognize.

Oh, boy. If this does what I hope it does, it'll make naming the Dungeon Keeper sprites hella easier. :D

haha, well i hope it does, and if not, i can always make a program that will load a bunch of images, and you can order them how you like, then it will compile those into the name001 format that can then be loaded by SpriTool, or I can make that as an extension to SpriTool so it can be used by anyone lol.

Sorry for this huge bump, but just as soon as I found a need for this tool, the download link died. Do you think a re-upload of this could be done?
