As a Doom 3 fan(boy), no.

To you, maybe. Keep in mind that many complained Doom 3 was too dark, and that was used as a gameplay gimmick in several parts.

Personally, I think too many maps in HPack have fog. Some of them (Like Shades' map whose name I can't remember (Scorched Earth?) ) work with it, but they don't all look good with fog. In some cases it's thrown in as a half-assed attempt to look atmospheric, when things like ambient sounds and proper music choice would work far better.

I wasn't talking about the dark areas, goddamnit. I was talking about the outdoors or the caves, which were not as dark but were very dusty. Doom 3 monsters looked better in dust. Similarly the fog in Heretic could be saved by making it swirl like dust, especially in maps like H3M4, so that it looks original compared to all the standard featureless fade used so far. But how do you render dust in hardware rendering?... Very detailed translucent sprites?

The fog looks bad at least in part because it doesn't match with the sky. When stuff gets foggy and colored in the distance, remember that the sky is an actual thing that's even further in the distance. It should be colored to match the fog that's affecting the actual level structures. Bright, foggy orange silhouettes against a suddenly much darker brown sky don't make sense and look fake: they should fade relatively seamlessly into the foggy distance beyond them.

Indeed. The nice part is that you can get away with a blank sky this way.

That works fine, I tried to emulate that in TCoTD2, not perfect but at least it gave a certain amount of atmosphere. This trick is also used in Stronghold btw (e.g. Vader's desert map "Dangoo Desert" afaik)

Some more development shots of unfinished maps currently in progress!
Just for the record: There are still a few slots open, so if you want to help us finishing the complete pack, it's the right time to do now - we are looking forward to any kind of mapping help!

I just cut several extraneous powerups and other unused stuff over the course of this week, so HPack is losing it's reputation as a cluster-eff of resources, by the way. I've also been improving a lot of the monsters we're keeping, so everything is as great as it can be. :D

So, yeah, just an FYI bump.
