[WIP] The Game (working title)

Post by Caligari87 »

Thanks to an idea by Cutmanmike and some others, I decided to cut my new modding teeth on a simple little puzzle, which most of you will quickly recognize.

This is merely a demo of what I hope to accomplish; as of right now, I have about 8-10 other ideas floating around that could be done in this style.

Like I said, credit goes to CutmanMike for the idea and partial script, the voicework is my own, and everything else is original. It's fairly simple, but enjoy. Tested only with the latest version of GZDoom, but should work in ZDoom as well.

That's pretty awesome. Nice voice work, it sounds great.

Keep this up, if the others are as good or better than this one, you'll have a very interesting project. :D

Can't play at work, so what's the partial script you're talking about? It's probably hotwax's :)

There was a missing actor (<!>) in the nukage, visible from the front, and the little tiles aren't coloured by fog, so they look like they're blasting darkness into the air (this is ZDoom obviously). Also, I managed to save myself even whilst being crushed, so it wasn't too bad.

Good little wad though. I'd like to see more :)

Damnnit! I just lost the game!

Also, More maps, please. This was very nice, albeit the detail in the nukeage pit was a bit plain and didn't feel very foreboding.

@CutmanMike:
Cutmanmike wrote:"Hello Flynn... I want to play a game. The person in front of you is in fact... Yourself. A voodoo doll if you will. In 20 seconds he will be crushed by the ceiling, thus ending your life. If you wish to live, there is a blue skull key somewhere in the nukage pit next to you. If you hurry you can save the voodoo doll, and yourself. The clock is ticking Flynn..." *crushing ceiling slowly starts*
In fact it's exactly what you said. :D

Most likely it's an inactive dynamic light...drat...
Phobus wrote:Also, I managed to save myself even whilst being crushed, so it wasn't too bad.
Partially intentional, but I was thinking about increasing the damage a notch, so maybe I will.
Firewolf wrote:...albeit the detail in the nukeage pit was a bit plain and didn't feel very foreboding.
I was wondering about that; could anyone help me on that front? I'd very much like to redesign the entire nukeage pit, but those have never been a strong point for me.

Thanks for the input, all! I'm probably going to start working on another level, and I'll keep tweaking this one as long as I get feedback. Like I said, I need help with the nukage pit, so any advice would be appreciated.

Heh, cool.

I died right in front of the switch, blue key in hand.

The voice was cool. It sounded a little like the instructor in the training level of the first Thief game.

I survived barely. I got 16 health left over thanks to that crusher.

I'm accepting suggestions :D I need a few more ideas, so I'd be open if you've got 'em.

Well, the crusher is going to be a bit more...mean...next time around. I'm still smoothing out the gameplay balance.

I don't know specifically what to suggest for additional puzzles, but something that relies a little bit less on chance and more on skill would be nice. As far as I can tell, the blue skull appears at a random location and it's mainly luck whether you run in the right direction or not.

I think this is done very well. i agree with Enjay that this should be skill-based rather than luck, although one or two puzzles based on chance with minor consequences for failing wouldn't be bad.
