Hacx 2.0 IWAD Detection

Postby Xaser » Sun Jul 01, 2012 6:20 pm

Just a quick something I figure I'll sneak in if at all possible.

This simple patch modifies IWADINFO to add IWAD detection for the Hacx 2.0 IWAD. Detection is the same as Hacx 1.2 and earlier, except the HACX-R lump has been changed to HACX-E (for "enhanced") to easily differentiate the two IWAD versions. It can be tested with the "Hacxmas Alpha" version, and I can guarantee the detection scheme will not change at this point. ;)

[EDIT] Patch updated -- see two posts down.

I haven't added any additional names to the names list, as the final 2.0 IWAD will still be named "hacx.wad". I guess it would be okay to add "hacx20.wad" into the list in case someone wants to differentiate between the two (a la udoom.wad), but I'll leave that to Randy & Graf.

That's an absolute necessity. I guess most people would like to keep both, considering that there's fundamental differences between them.

All right, then. Since Hacx 1.2 versions already use hacx.wad, I'll endorse "hacx2.wad" as an official alternative for the Hacx 2.0 IWAD. Patch updated to suit:

[EDIT] Damn it, I knew I was submitting this too late. I hope some sort of interim bugfix schedule works out, or at least something that doesn't result in a 2-year gap before the next one.

hey! There's the 2.6 branch! Maybe it'll be patched there and after a few months a 2.6.1 will come out, who knows! :D

This is just my opinion, but if Hacx 2.0 is going to be released as hacx.wad I would actually recommend doing the opposite and having the original have the alternative of hacxclassic.wad or something. The reason being that for multiplayer people are assumed to be using the latest version (which will be 2.0), thus using an alternative name for that version would be counterproductive I think.

In my case I actually have doomu.wad as the 3 epsiode version of Doom.

Counterpoint: chex.wad, chex3.wad.

I'd say Hacx 2.0 should have IWADs named hacx2.wad, not as an alternative, but as the only name it ever has.

I myself just keep them named the same thing but in different folders so that it doesn't conflict.
