Fullscreen anti-aliasing
I'm not saying that aliasing is more apparent in this than other games (which it's not), but it would be nice if zdoom allowed full screen anti-aliasing.

Anti-aliasing is normally available in 2x, 4x, 8x, and 16x. Basically with 2x anti-aliasing the game will render at twice the resolution of what is set, convert it to .cfg and then resize it to the normal resolution. (with 4x it will render it at four times, etc.)

Do you have even the slightest idea what this would mean for a [b}software renderer[/b]?

Re: Fullscreen anti-aliasing
It's a shame I can't post 'Total Annihilation!', since it'd be technically incorrect.

Re: Fullscreen anti-aliasing
Even when using a hardware renderer, AA on sprites and textures as low res as those in Doom simply looks horrible.
Re: Fullscreen anti-aliasing
What about using GZDoom if you want anti-aliasing in ZDoom? That's a novel idea I'm sure...

I love the attention spans here.Nightmare just wrote:Even when using a hardware renderer, AA on sprites and textures as low res as those in Doom simply looks horrible.

Re: Fullscreen anti-aliasing
Nightmare is writing bullshit by presenting his opinion as fact.
That said, GZDoom has fullscreen antialiasing.
But since it can only be set at startup it must be done via command line:
'gzdoom +gl_vid_multisample 4' will do the trick. Once done the value is stored in the ini.

Re: Fullscreen anti-aliasing
I think Nightmare's talking about GZDoom's sprite bi/trilinear filtering, in which case I'd agree with him; they make Doom's low res sprites look like a bunch of blurry crap...

Re: Fullscreen anti-aliasing
As I said, that's an opinion, not fact!
Re: Fullscreen anti-aliasing
I'm of the opinion that bi/tri linear filtering looks GREAT on textures, but not good on sprites. I wonder if there could be a way to resize the sprite 4x before applying the filter. Or disable it altogether for sprites.
On-topic, I tried to force anti-aliasing for zdoom in Nvidia control panel. No AA, 180fps, 2xAA 120fps, 4xAA 80fps, but here's the kicker, I see NO CHANGE in the image. I guess a change is noticeable in real 3d apps, like GZDoom. It's supposed to smooth jagged lines, right?

Re: Fullscreen anti-aliasing
Considering that all ZDoom is drawing to the screen is a bunch of rectangles, of course you're not going to see any visible change when you force antialiasing on through the control panel.
Re: Fullscreen anti-aliasing
How exactly was it presented "as fact"? We don't really need to prefix all statements of personal preference with "in my opinion", do we?Graf Zahl wrote:Nightmare is writing bullshit by presenting his opinion as fact.

Re: Fullscreen anti-aliasing
That always depends on what you want to say. In this case, yes.
Re: Fullscreen anti-aliasing
Any statement that includes one or more positive or negative adjectives (e.g. "horrible"), adverbs, or verbs is clearly an opinion, with certain exceptions (a fact-based discussion of such things doesn't count, for example
). Prefixing such statements with terms such as "in my opinion" is therefore redundant and unnecessary (note: a lame attempt at ironic humour was used in this sentence). The only time such a qualifying phrase needs to be used is when it isn't obvious whether something is being presented opinion or fact, such as when it isn't clear what definition is being used for a particular word. For example, "you're full of crap" could be opinion or it could be fact, depending on what definition of "crap" is being used.
I would also like to point out that by your own logic you're equally guilty, because "Nightmare is writing bullshit" is simply your opinion, yet it is presented as fact.
